NUFC Battle To Make Their Point

Eight changes were made to the line up from Sunday's game against Liverpool and those looking at that stat from afar would say a point was a good result considering.

I tend to share that verdict but reflect on why we aren't taking this competition just a tad more serious.

Brugges were there for the taking and if we had used a slightly stronger side then we would have done. Probably at a canter.

We did after all make such a song and dance over qualifying for Europe anyway and the calibre of player that would be queuing up to play for us.

Anyway, as for the game itself, Brugges were a side that broke well on the counter but were weak at the back and as the game went on they just packed the defence a bit to counter us in return for our strengths.

Their two goals came in their first meaningful attacks with the first a similar type goal to the one conceded at Anfield last week albeit with less skill and less intention. It still ended up in our net though.

The second was more a scuffed shot which seemed to take Tim Krul by surprise as it snuck in the far corner.

Our goals were high quality ones with the impressive Vurnon Anita volleying a peach into the corner of the net for the first and Shola Ameobi toe poking the second after an excellent move involving his brother Sammy.

The rest of the game went through a similar pattern until late on where we had most of the possession whilst they tried to beat us on the break. Both sides being unsuccessful of adding to the scoreline.

NUFC Star Man

Vurnon Anita - Maybe not the most skillful on display but the most assured with a performance fitting his price tag, in what a right back should actually play like.

He impressed me greatly tonight.
