New TV Deal
09 February 2018 10:24 Post ID: #488387
Bidding for round 1 has just closed. Some say this wont be as big as is being made out with the likes of Faceshite and Netflix not getting involved when it was speculated they would.

An announcement could come today on who gets what but if another round of bidding is needed then this will drag on next week.

With there being 7 packages up for auction, the worst case scenario for the tv companies is if more get the rights or one of either Sky or BT get less than they have now.

Can see Sky hoy the toys out the pram massively if they dip out and they may change their propaganda over us. Unlikely as that sounds.

Package A: 32 matches on Saturdays at 12:30
Package B: 32 matches on Saturdays at 17:30
Package C: 24 matches on Sundays at 14:00 and eight matches on Saturdays at 19:45
Package D: 32 matches on Sundays at 16:30
Package E: 24 matches on Mondays at 20:00 or Fridays at 19:30/20:00 and eight matches on Sundays at 14:00
Package F: 20 matches from one Bank Holiday and one midweek fixture programme
Package G: 20 matches from two midweek fixture programmes

That's a lot of football on tv. Seriously? Ah well. I've as much chance of donating my hard-earned to Murdoch and his clan as I am to handing it over to FC. It isn't going to happen.

On another point. Does anybody know of anyone who watches even a quarter, nah, 10% of the footie that's on offer? I certainly don't.

Agree completely it is heading towards overload on TV, with content above quality, add the cost of CL football on Bt, and it becomes excessive INHO.

Fatty must be rubbing his stumpy arms together at the moment.....

I do find myself wondering why I pay for sky sports every month, especially when the ashes was on BT. Just habit I guess.

With Amazon predicted to be winning one of the other 2 packages, it is looking like the TV deal bubble may be levelling out with there looking like only being a small increase on the last deal.

A rise of about 8% on the last equating to an extra £400m. Not entirely the outcome that Ashley expected no doubt.

£400m is equal to £20m per club. In Ashley's world, that makes his price over £500m.

Don't forget, we still have overseas deals to come.

The overseas deals look like saving the day but the next auction could see a drop.

Looks like no great increase from what I am hearing which I hope will prove to be good news re any potential takeover. No reason for Ashley to inflate his asking price. Doesn't mean he won't do it anyway of course. If the bubble is bursting (as reported) perhaps he will think its time to get out. I hope so.

Two packages not sold and the deal is less than the last one all good news in my opinion.

It's interesting, somehow it seems to depend on what you read.

Overall cash looks like being up by 8%. With more matches going out live, the fee per match is down.

Overseas deals yet to come, there is serious inflation in the services markets of some countries. Ashley must still feel he has a few bob to come yet.

Customers who had BT sport were sent a letter with the heading in large, bold words, 'Renew your contract now to avoid paying £6.75 a month extra for BT Sport'. I've been told they put the price up £3.50 a month instead.

The £6.75 was on the package of all BT Sports packages Mc. You already paid a subscription on that.

The £3.50 was for the last "free"* package, which is their BT Sport lite package, namely BT1 in non-HD. As a BT broadband customer that represented £42 pa, or as we civil servants call it, 3 months pay "rise" so I sacked it off. Was crap anyway - watching Liverpool in non-HD more often than not wasn't worth it.

* anyone paying for BT broadband knows the term "free" really is quite a misnomer.
