A great player and an inspiration to many players who followed him. Iconic, his influence extended well beyond the football field. Met him once when he was visiting a local firestation to support a charity event. Quiet, soft spoken and utterly self-effacing; a true gent.

Did a 600 mile round trip today and heard the tributes on Radio 5. Anyone who saw him play could not forget what he brought to the game, raw power as well as class, both in football and character.

Despite what we could be like as supporters at the time, hearing an interview with Viv Anderson in particular, I somehow think he would have liked the way a lot of NUFC fans called Andy Cunningham "Blackie Milburn".

Went to a game away to Coventry around 87 I think when we had the likes of Gazza and co. We won 3-1 but Regis got their goal which was an equaliser from around 30 yards. Top corner.

Would be worth stupid money nowadays.

He played for West Brom in the 3-0 win at SJP in '77. Not sure if Thompson played alongside him but together they were awesome. Hard as nails, he had to be for what he took on and off the field. RIP

Sad loss to football.
Heartening to hear how black players were inspired by him & how he dealt with the Neanderthals.

" Of all the legendary players to have worn the Real Madrid shirt down the years, only one has ever left the Nou Camp pitch to a standing ovation. His name was Laurie Cunningham. "

Got the National Express coach from Manchester to Coventry for that game, was an impoverished student in Manchester.

Frank Bruno fought Joe Bugner later the same night

Top game. Remember a pub being just about drunk dry by Mags. Was in the seats and had great side on view of Regis' goal. Spot on Toony - a great strike from a great player. His MOTD goal of the season will live on forever. RIP.

Apart from being sat next to Brian Tinnion's dad (he had a good game and put in the cross for the third I think) as Regis got it I remember this fella going "don't let HIM shoo.. Oh shit!". God, was that really over 30 years ago?

Funny what age does to the mind. In my thoughts his goal was from 30 yards but still, remember it being outside the box.
