I read today that in France normal football clubs now rest their best players against PSG because they know they can't win anyway. I would define normal football clubs as those who are run within their means rather than as playthings for fabulously wealthy individuals or consortia. Like us perhaps but without that greedy fat bastard taking the piss.

Rather puts Rafa's tactics against City into perspective. Imagine if you had to field a pub cricket team against Australia or enter an F1 motor race in a (say) Audi TT. That's pretty much the equation when our whole squad didn't even cost as much as their full back. I know it aint just about money but generally speaking its like anything. The vast majority of the time better things cost more.

So how long is top flight football sustainable now that any pretence of financial fair play has been forgotten? I am not sure.

As I understand it in the NFL (for example) they vastly improved the competitiveness of the league by changing the draft pick system. Other leagues have salary limits which keeps it fair(er). What do we think? Could there be a better way or do we all just have to stand around outside the shop window in future praying that our team is chosen to play in the big league?

Agree with all that mate, I think the only way lesser clubs can can do anything against clubs like city is park the bus like benitez did.
If more teams did it maybe FIFA would get their finger out because it would become so boring to watch the sponsors and most important the fans might stay away.

How can it be fair when a club can spend over £300m on players like manure have and their manager states its not enough.

The NFL allow the worst team to have the first draft pick and they also have a salary cap which means you can only have so many superstars in your team. I cant see the powers in football wanting to change anything because they have their noses in the trough, financial fair play hasnt been enforced. I do think that the mentality of teams needs to change the majority of PL tesms have been beaten by City before a ball is kicked.

It would be even better IMHO if the 15 or so normal teams just said fuck it, they can have the three points, and didn't turn out. The PL would have to act then because they wouldn't have a product to sell any more.

Good questions and I often find myself pondering.

The NFL is a fairly closed market with a limited number of franchises. Premier League football is part of a more complex set of markets with the top 4 or so getting UEFA TV rights cash too. We also have a global population of players, adding to the marketability internationally.

Thinking through the salary cap, then that would open opportunities for other countries, such as China now. For a case study, you can always look back at Sony, VHS and Betamax. Sky has too much of a vested interest. Ultimately, Sky will have to start talking up the fascination of the battle and shut up the likes of Carragher and Neville.

No, it's not fair but ultimately, for our own pleasure, we can hope that we get some big spenders in, get to a point when we can sneak in when a top 4 club slips and hope the new owners invest to stay there.

Hasn't Benitez has been parking the bus since his Liverpool days ?

An excellent idea. Makes a statement far more than playing a bunch of kids. City awarded 3 points with -3 goals in "withdrawn" teams goal difference. As City hit most for 6, I'm sure they'd take it n all.

I would love to see it. Stick your "super sunday" up your arse. Remember, SKY only have a product to sell because of the normal teams turning out every week and begging for the scraps from the big table.

There will be no change as the game is pretty much as the authorities want now with record viewing figures abroad to go with the record income.

Also anyone that has been to a game and then watched it back on TV will notice the propaganda involved with the commentary as well as the crowd noise as fans abroad wont know these things.

Times ive came home with a headache due to the din but it comes across on telly as if the 30 fans surrounding the mics at Crystal Palace create more of an atmosphere. The game's riddled with corruption for varying reasons but not necessarily on the level we think.

What propaganda toony?

Surely you can't be referring to the criticism of having the entire team camped out in and around our box

Defending in your own half is one thing...defending your own box (badly) was a fuckin embarrasment

Wasn't talking about football tactics. Just the TV not accurately reporting things correctly including the crowd noise. The same happens with the BBC with their highlights packages at times although even the most biased Toon fan couldn't have sugar coated Wednesday from what it was although a little moral victory has come out of it.

Well to be fair......everytime the commentary mentioned the lack of atmosphere, the cameras panned around the ground to prove it

They weren't being critical either...just suggesting that they were dying to be a part of it but the negative football just didn't allow it

I have a pal who supports QPR, he said to me ages ago that while it’s not as glamorous, the Championship is far more competitive and far more fun. I laughed at him but there is a lot of truth in what he said. Twenty teams in the Premiership with around 14/15 of them just making up the numbers. Football in this country has been fucked by excessive money and has suffered right down to grass roots. We still have great young players coming through but these days most of them are not given a chance at playing top level. Our national side reflects this as we will see in the upcoming World Cup.

I am getting more and more fed up as each season goes by. To me now going to a home game is more of a catch up over a few beers with my mates.

Probably showed pre-match footage to try to con the foreigners. Funny how very few times this season the away fans have not been heard in the ground but they seem loud and clear on TV.

Wouldn't be like someone has an agenda and in Man City's case for fans seeing their 18th win in a row, they were a disgrace.

No, was just jesting with that bit, more that the atmosphere for certain games is canned for some reason or another.

They have to can the atmosphere for some of the games in the London Stadium as most of the time it’s dead as a dodo.
