I would be astounded if we got anything other than a sound thrashing.
I envisage a red card.
I hope we give them a real battle.

Interesting team selection. He's obviously saving players for Brighton but I think Murphy and Aarons on the wings is to stop their full backs getting forward and I'm sure that Shelvey is going to ping some diagonal balls up the wings. It does worry me their three up top against our back 3/5. However Brighton and Stoke are much more important so a decent performance and close result is as much as we can expect. We've only got 3 points in 19 league games against these cunts.

Merry Christmas, one and all! Flat out with the kids so this is the first time to get on and wish everyone felicitations.

I don't expect anything from tonight but it may be that the festive season, the cold weather and too much grub and indulgence conspire to confound the millionaires of Man City. Let us hope so.

Merry Christmas everyone from a sunny New Zealand. Just about to watch the game live as I always do. At least it's not an UnGodly time.
Rafa parking the bus I reckon. saving the guys for the next game I suppose. I reckon we will get thumped . But my heart says we could surprise hahaha.
Anyone knows what happened to the Spanish left back Jesus Gamez I think his name was. Saw him play once and he actually looked decent. I know it was just one game but still. I think he looked better than Manquilo.
Anyway boys all of the best. Enjoy the game

Not a big fan of Elliot but that was a class save.

Playing for a 0-0 here, that's 20 mins without conceding ....... YET! agree above, giving Citeh too much respect here.

Could not see those tactics working in a month of Sunday's. As we tire the walls could well fall in.
Might as well tried to score a few ourselves.

The city players havent broken a sweat yet no doubt Rafa will be doing cartwheels because its only 1-0 at half time and we had a couple of corners. The go on about fans being important but fuck me how could anyone get excited about that dross

Well I found the griping of Neville nothing short of fucking hilarious. Newcastle aren't going to get anything out of this game whether they attack or not. But that's not the point. Whilst City may whack the likes of Bournemouth; Swansea; West Ham et al 6 nowt- they may only beat Newcastle 2 or 3 nil. That's potentially +3 or +4 goals on rivals, which could be vital at the end of the season.

So boo-hoo Neville. My heart fucking bleeds. If u and your sky paymasters don't like it - don't create a league with massive financial disparities between sides and then moan like a bitch when a game is less than pleasing on the eye. As I say - fucking hilarious.

Oh without a doubt, Mick. Without a doubt! Haha. Mind - when I went - I didn't like paying £40 to see them humped by the likes of Liverpool; the Mancs or even sunlun either.

I hope a lot of neutrals have switched off to watch the latest episode of coronation dross; deadenders or latest repeat of Mrs Brown's boys - that would be one in the eye for sky; their ratings and their sponsors.

Instead of whinging about tactics, Neville could perhaps learn - employing a similar style might have earned him at least 1 point in his disastrous Spanish managerial (short-lived) career. Little manc tosspot and sky lickspittle that he is.

There’s showing a team respect and then there’s letting them knock it about like a training match on your home territory. Truly awful stuff, throw a tackle in, test them for Christ’s sake they are getting treated like royalty here, fucking embarrassing. The famous St James’ Park. Fight.

Difference Merino makes, actually having a footballer on our side on the pitch makes us believe, someone confident enough and good enough to have time on the ball and not shit themselves every time they have the ball and give it straight back to the opposition.

Scoreline could be important goal difference wise come the end of the season.BUT only if we beat the likes of Brighton at home in the next game.Diame,Murphy,Joselu and Aarons out for Atsu,Merino,Gayle and Ritchie and we should do just that.

Tactics aside nothing lost as no one expected anything from this game.

If only Gayle had buried that header though.......

Here's hoping the special one doesn't give Brighton any respect on Saturday,we are better than them.

I might be a lone voice but I thought Rafa had it spot on.

For a team that averaged a winning margin of over 2,5 goals per game. the 1-0 is a fantastic result, given the lack of resources given by Ashley. Put in context, a win of any sort next time out puts us above Brighton on goal difference. If GD is worth one position, the (hopefully) new owners might have a Premier League club where otherwise they might not.

We can go into the next 6 games or so without being totally demoralised, perhaps even reinvigorated if we get a few signings. 9-12 points from those sets us up to have a cushion.

At the end of the day, we have to look at the season in context. Rafa is punching well above his weight with the Championship squad that Ashley lets him put on the pitch.

The premiership is gash outside the top 6 rex

Other managers are dealing with the same problem.

The difference seems to be that they just get on with it rather than whinge and put their players down.

Exactly Rexn - totally agree. Massive boost to goal difference not shipping 5 or more (much to sky's disgust- "we want you to play ... and get smashed"). Tactic clearly to keep score down and have a mini game within a game in the last 20 minutes and give it a go. Whisker away from pulling it off with Gayle's header; shame his shit control when thru necessitated a pathetic dive earlier.

Rafa's tactics, although criminal to the naked eye, were absolutely spot on.

If someone had said pre-kick off would you have accepted a 1-0 deficit going into the last 15 minutes then you would have snapped the hand off. Man City were massively worthy winners on the day but ive seen far too many games go against us when we've been stronger to even worry about that.

Thought we had yet another weak ref for the millionth time and a lesson for anyone that wants a decision to just dive unless you happen to be wearing black and white.

Hard to pick a man of the match but I thought Lascelles and Dummett were right up there. Diame may be too late for the forthcoming return of dancing on ice but there's always next year as he played as if he was in training.

The ploy might have worked if we had Premiership strikers but we don't, Gayle and Joselu are not good enough especially against good sides.
Now we have to make the most of the next few fixtures with a few wins else it's wasted.

It's going to be mighty tight at the bottom come the end of the season. If Newcastle stay up on goal difference by anything like 1 or 2 goals, people will look back on tonight as the game that saved their bacon and rightly laud Rafa's tactics to the rafters. Honestly - I applaud the tactics tonight and the players efforts in playing to them. Thought it was a good effort all round.

Pissing off Neville and sky in the process was a massive bonus to boot.

Let's see how palace get on against them later in the week. I bet you any money they were watching tonight hoping/expecting city to bury Newcastle. A 4 nil defeat would have seen palace leap Newcastle without even playing. A 6 nil defeat and West Ham would have as well with Newcastle suddenly shot for confidence and 4th bottom. All bar Swansea would have had a better goal difference. Well- tough tits.
