Good win that, you were by far the better side on the day, the saved penalty was the turning point.

Huge away support there who never shut up the whole game.

Well said Cm.That was never a penalty mind, "the ref was singing I'm forever blowing bubbles after he blew the whistle", for what it's worth I can't see your boys going down .

I said before kick off that there would be a controversial moment and that pen that never was had the potential to cost the club millions.

As it was, a little credit must go to Atsu or whoever it was that approached Elliot to whisper in his ear. Whether the info given was of any use or not, I reckon the uncertainty put Ayew off as he must have been wondering what was said.

It really didn’t matter what was said to the keeper,Ayew was never going to score, who allowed him to take the penalty is a mystery, he has to be the biggest was of 20 million pound ever. Fondly know here as Bambi on ice.

A relegation struggle for a lot of us, luckily there are some really bad teams out there , worse than both of us.

I agree. It's as bad a division as I can ever remember. Man City heading for a 100 points this season and to think tha Man Utd beat us to the title with 86 points in 1996 just proves the league is full of dross. I think our mate Pardew will take WBA down and I think Bournemouth's times up. After that it's anyone of about ten teams.

Good needed win. At least we were attacking and looked decent. Defensively still a bit shambolic but be thankful for small mercies.
Man. City could cut us to ribbons but subsequent games look winnable if we perform as yesterday.

Agree with this 100% Owl.

It's obvious the team is a lot better than Benitez wants us to believe especially when you consider how poor the premiership is.

Huddersfield, who looked gash when they beat us in August are currently 11th, a massive 4 points ahead of us,yet our manager has us flirting with relegation.

I did not see the game so I don't know if it was a well deserved win,but nonetheless,a fantastic three points and a great xmas boost.

Not for the first time this season, it was a game where we created and missed a few chances.
Aside from the 3 goals, we hit the bar and post plus missed a sitter through Gayle.

As Shearer highlighted on MOTD last night, every time we went forward we had about 3 or 4 options in the box and if we play like that away from home against the teams away from the top 6 then we'll be fine this season I reckon.

This is fairly interesting toony.

https://www.sportinglife.com/football/live/33384/stats

Not really, it paints a false picture as it classes a shot off the bar or post as the same as one 50 yards wide as off target.

Elliot had nowt to save aside from the goals apart from one long range bobbled shot that he palmed away plus we were quicker on the ball so possession time would always favour them.

When we played them at home and won 3 nil,we had 17 shots(8 on target)and only 37 percent possession.

http://www.espn.co.uk/football/matchstats?gameId=480885

Like to know who does these stats. With that many shots, possession cant be that low can it?

All that matters is the win. Possession % doesn't win games, putting it into the back of the net is all that counts.

seasons greetings pie mag, hope it’s going well in the EU. You must all be gutted now we’re all celebrating our blue passports.

On a footie note, I think our squad is dreadful with a lot of them actually playing above themselves with hard graft and heart and soul. Trying to think of players with the talent even for mid table prem and there aren’t many imo:

Merino
Hayden
Laschelles
Yedlin
Shelvey
Atsu
Possibly Perez.

Benitez plays any card he has to get Ashley to strengthen - as he should do surely but I’d be interested in why you think that squad is capable of more than Rafa is getting from it?

Just going by what i've seen in the games Manx

Can't remember which thread I posted in highlighting the games we clearly could have won had we played with a bit more adventure and belief, but there were quite a few.

West Brom is a prime example, they were crap and we looked worse than that, until we had a go at them.
It's not the first time it's happened this season either, that's got to be down to the manager

Our squad is crap, but it's better than most outside the established top 5/6.... again just my opinion based on the games I've seen.

Maybe I watch them through rose tinted specs, but even with Diame and joselu in the side we look capable of beating the other teams competing for our mid table mediocrity spot.

I do think we look over cautious at times, but he’s playing to the personnel. Since he’s switched to 4-4-2, results have deteriorated so Imo were better off boring everyone to a 1-0 win.

Even now though, and if we do look capable despite that, and I agree we do look better than some of the others aroubd us, then part of that must be down to the manager getting them up to that level? Joselu is one of the obvious examples. He’s clearly not good enough for the prem but Rafa has him grafting, winning headers, challenging for every ball. So he looks ALMOST like a premier league player but we all know that his natural ability just isn’t enough. Now Imagine we had someone Like Shearer up there, or more realistically, a fit Andy Carroll or someone of his ilk?

Things could improve drastically with only 2 new faces but if we buy 4 or 5 we should catapult up that league. Would be stupid not to but it’s ashley ....so expect the worst.

Anyway I’d better get out of bed and get the dog out. Speak to you later.
