How bad is the current team

Piemag - I was simply stating that to get anywhere near the team that finished 5th we'd have to spend at least 80m in todays market and probably considerably more than that. Rafa's about even on transfers ins and outs since he's come in and is feeding on scraps. Yes he made some poor buys at Liverpool but they still won trophies and he finished with a pretty low NET spend at Liverpool when you factor in the Torres sale.

Got it now vin.

The net spend in 11-12 was 12m but lets nor forget Colo, Jonas, Tiote and Ben Arfa cost 26.5m in the seasons before that. In todays transfer market that 38m probably equates to about 80m at least.

At the risk of sounding stupid you've lost me there vin.

What are you saying ?

On a side note there are two different arguments pertaining to rafa.

One is about him as a manager and that debate still rages among the Liverpool support ,so we have no chance

The Other more important one IMO is this,
has Ashley used Benitez to gain time and grab millions more of the clubs money, and are the fans who stopped going or boycotted merchandise but accepted rafa as their saviour, just as much to blame as the 50,000 who did absolutely FA while fatty dry humped NUFC ?

I don't think there's any debate to be had regards Ashley and Rafa. I said a long time ago Benitez has allowed himself to be complicit in the Mike Ashley deception. He's gave Ashley a completely free pass the summer that followed the relegation, that should've been a moment of real trauma for Ashley but Benitez united and rallied the support. The squad was reset, the wage bill lowered, a huge profit made on the sales of the likes of Sissoko, no money was spent in January and most importantly we came back to the money league within one season. That's a perfect appointment in Ashley's eyes.

There is one to be had on Benitez's abilities as a manager. With what he's done in the game he's our most decorated manager since Bobby Robson. At the moment if we're basing his abilities purely on what we're seeing on the pitch he's a busted flush.

I don't hide the fact that I don't like his style of football keggy, only the more successful Mourinho irritates me more, but I thought we were better than Everton for large parts of that game and that has to be down to his coaching, especially when you consider the rag tag group of players he's assembled.

His insistence on starting Diame has me stumped.

It's these baffling managerial decisions has has cost us valuable points, not the players IMO.

I'm with you Piemag on some of the selections. however, I can rationalise them given his underlying Kaizen philosophy.

Number 10 is a big problem. Diame is not the answer, neither is Ayoze but who is? In my book, probably Ritchie.

Against Everton, Rafa's rationale for not playing Shelvey became apparent.

As for his style, just think of the 2nd half in Istanbul.

it's also interesting to see the stats for Rafa against us when at Liverpool. His first 3 years were: P6 W4 D0 L2 F11 A 4. The last 2 years when we were in the same league: P4 W4 D0 L0 F14 A1.

Kaizen philosophy......

get you

That 2nd half in Istanbul was all about Gerrard (who by the way thought rafa was a pain in the ass) rex

Benitez had him in a defensive role in the first half, Gerrard asked all staff including the manager to leave the dressing room while he spoke with the players during the break, the rest is history.

Let’s not forget one of the most blatant dives ever for a penalty from Gerrard and he got away with it, played the Italians at their own game I suppose. The most uncharacteristic Italian display ever that second half, Pirlo says he still has sleepless nights about it.

I was watching a bit of the Palace:Leics game when I realized we don't have a player on our books who would get in either side (imho). That's how far we have fallen behind the required standard.

So we have taken the least points from points available of any team in the top European leagues and that was before today's game. Are we the worst team in Europe? In recent form it's hard to argue but you may as well play with 9 men if you're going to pick Joselu and Perez.

Or 7 if you also consider Lejeune and Diame.
