Random quote: Platinii - I would prefer a coffee table at left back instead of Perch. I doubt even a coffee table could lose the ball twice in one move.

What is mental is that PSG are being allowed, still, to get around the FFP rules which should just be scrapped.

There's nowt wrong in theory with their Qatar owners splashing the cash because that's what we want all our clubs owners to do but when we have ours hiding behind the rules, they just get theirs to bump up the costing of sponsorship. UEFA even said that theirs was 'only' worth something like £100m a season but PSG just said it was worth £200m. So what's the point?

Neymar will cost something like £300m over 5 years but will generate that back in increases of all revenue streams for them as well as the French league. Is it that mental in theory then?

Of course it's nuts but that was the price to break his contract via his release clause. PSG are owned by Oryx Qatar Sports Investments so money is no object. The big problem is that it forces up the ante and perceived value of the next level down, and, eventually, we reach Ashley's level which will by now be a couple of loan signings, if that.

Platini, the corrupt cunt's plan from the outset. English sides ran world football, and he didn't like it.

Said back then, all Platini is doing with his 'fair-play' shite, is to stop the English game from dominating.

I don't think it's mental,it's the market.

A better perspective can be gained by looking at the 70's where top players reportedly earned £11,000 - £15,000 a year which roughly translates to £74,000 - £95,000 in today’s money.

When you consider the average wage in that era it becomes clear that the market has not changed that much.

It's a phenomenon our owner understands and is demonstrated by the sale of Carrol....etc.

That's why I believe the consolidation argument doesn't stack up,any real talent bought on the cheap will be sold sooner rather than later.

Its stupid money but he is worth what a club will pay for him i remember Trevor Francis being the first million pound footballer and everyone being up in arms he scored the winner in the eutopean cup final and the price wasnt mentioned anymore, none of us were bothered when we were breaking the transfer record for Shearer, we dont need to worry about it these days because we shop in the bargain basement.

Our centre forward at the time Mick as I'm sure you remember also went on to score the only goal in the European cup final a couple of years later. We bought him for 225k and sold him for 500k to Villa. Some things will never change at the Toon, it's as if it's ingrained in the club.

I get market forces and supply and demand etc but that kind of cash for a football player is disgusting ... In context with how much good could be done with that sort of money.

I get that he's a 'global premium entertainer' (even if I think he's not among the worlds elite); but that kind of sum for his services, for which he then also has to be paid, is absolutely shocking.

Assume he scores 100 goals for the club - that 2m per goal - not including paying his wages - so it will be nearer 4m per goal, assuming he scores 100 in 4 seasons.
