Mitrovic fighting for his Toon career now.

As is De Jong. Who is just not lethal enough to warrant a game IMO.

Quotes from a pissed off sounding Rafa:

On the performance : "Not the best"

On more signings : "Hopefully"

Most of us can agree that Ashley is not interested in football, which in turn must mean Benitez was not employed for that reason.

Rafa himself must be aware of this,so i'm not buying the pissed off routine.

I'm constantly reading that Ashley needs rafa but his actions so far suggests he has a plan z.

Rafa's served his purpose for Ashley . He's acted as the buffer in a way Ashley wanted Pardew to but it went better than Ashely could've dreamed of. The pressure from the relegation was eased by Benitez, the club could sell players at a huge profit and reduce the wage bill and the season ticket sales were unaffected . It's the Mike Ashley reset I've spoken of before.

January was the key time for Benitez to prove whether he was Ashley's man or the fans and Ashley called his bluff. If Rafa had it contractually protected that he was in charge of transfer business he should have walked and got paid out. He either couldn't or he didn't want to.

I do think Benitez is genuinely pissed off, not for the first time he's in a situation where he's the the man in charge of a club with an untrustworthy regime (see fallouts with Rick Parry and later Hicks And Gillette at Liverpool and his time at Valencia), there's something in Rafa's make up or ego that finds him drawn to those situations, maybe it's a form of arrogance or a saviour complex. I do think that promises to him have been broken and the internal spin has been that deal a or deal b just wasn't workable. Ultimately Ashley's called him before and Rafa folded just like when Ashley called the fans bluff and we as a fanbase folded. There's no fear for Ashley in what we or Benitez can do. He knows he can ride it out just as he did with the Keegan situation or the sale of umpteen club assets or countless other times he treated the club we love with contempt.

As for Benitez I think he's trying to manipulate the fanbase as he has all along but I also think he's genuinely aggrieved at the current situation. There's far too many "hopefullys" from him of late. Rafa can't continue to play politics and we can't have these ridiculous thank god he's staying moments at the start and close of every window. The more these mini crises continue to appear and then be swept under the carpet the more he's part of the problem and not the solution .
