He played an excellent ball through to Gayle for the first goal and was probably one of the most composed on the pitch in the first half as he allowed Shelvey the room to pick his passes.

I agree, he didn't pull up any trees overall but I thought he did his chances no harm considering.

How long before De Jong is injured yet again, similarly Aaron's. Not optimistic about their chances of having a worthwhile impact.

I was at the match and de Jong stood out. Very skilful, keeps the ball in tight positions and was often involved. Would say the same for aarons. If we could keep them both fit they would make a difference. De Jong played more minutes than anyone else so I reckon Rafa decided to have a good look. But we won't keep them fit of course so it's irrelevant.

Anybody else think a good club doctor would be a sensible, sound investment?

His agent wants him to stay - he had this (as well as other things) to say:

Siem De Jong’s agent has admitted that the Dutchman is determined to become a success at Newcastle United and, despite having ‘other options’ on the table, will aim to take the big chance handed to him by Rafa Benitez over pre-season.

After a loan-spell with PSV last season, the 28-year-old ‘no.10’ has returned to Tyneside this summer and starred in our 2-1 win at Hearts on Friday night, providing some flashes of brilliance and an impressive assist for Dwight Gayle’s opener.

To me, Elliot was the 'star player' as without him in goal, we'd have been beaten.

I missed the first goal referred to in that statement, and from what Toony said - and by the time I put the game on, midway through the first-half-ish - I hardly saw him touch the ball - was completely anonymous.
