Worth counting players as well I think Toony.

I expect the squad size to increase only one or two in number.

Fringe players / players not Prem quality will be moved on, along with any 1st team players that we receive and offer for too good to turn down.

Goofy I think will go; Anita a new contract is 50/50 I think. Ameobi I hope leaves, even if just on loan. Not sure about Armstrong, or De Jong. Krul and/or Selz will also leave I reckon.

It's going to be a bit confusing in relation to numbers because once Thauvin's deal is official then it will technically reduce the squad, although he wasn't in last year's, but it will wipe out the spend to put us in credit of £3m - £4m.

There's also the Sissoko £5m instalment to think about as well.

Ignoring Thauvin and Wankoko. In the same way as ignoring Atsu was with us on loan too.

De Jong, Krul, and Armstrong are contracted to us full time, so figure. in the reckoning.

Currently, its a 6.5m spend (approx, and rounding) and +1 as far as numbers is concerned....he wasnt our player before.

That's another reason why it's complicated because most will judge us on the squad we had this season.

Chelsea had 38 players away on loan this year.

Rotten to the core or business genius? Very profitable either way . Loan fees each year must be worth a mint.

Sels completes his loan back to Belgium with no option for a sale as far as I know.

Wages will be interesting and may only be part funded.

Anyway....

Incoming - £6.2m for 1 player (Atsu)

Outgoing - Fees Not known. Thauvin's £9.5m fee may be in last year's accounts, the same as Mbabu's which could be another million. Anita, Sammyammyobi and Vuckic all released for nowt.

Sels (loan)

Probably best out on loan, rather than sold. 'keepers are confidence creatures, and a shit start doesn't mean a shit player.

Unless it's Hooper.

One in, one out so far; £6.2m spent.

Lejeune is done for £8.75m, the NUFC twitter account teasing it half an hour ago, so confirmation will come in the morning.

With Lejeune complete, spending is now just shy of £15m, incoming is a mystery although Grant Hanley is expected to be going soon for £5.5m.

2nd one in then. Not enough to quieten the knicker-wetters, but a step forward at least.

Should be as many as 5 or 6 more on their way, I reckon.

Given that Atsu was pretty much a formality, it's refreshing to see a manager start building from the back, typical of Rafa.

And he looks a bit like Sergio Ramos which is promising.

I like the way he envisions the playing squad, particularly with regards to balance.

Still way too few goals in the side though, so really want to see us add a quality striker (or even two) as priority.

Maybe he's bringing in other for relatively small fees, to save for the big outlay such a striker (or two) would cost.

Just watching that Lejeune interview before on the official site and it's backed up my initial gut instinct that whilst I knew little of him, the little bits of research ive done since make me think we could have a bargain here.

There was none of this trophy winning bollocks or giving it all for the shirt stuff, just a simple ambition to learn the language first and then establish himself. He also labelled his qualities in his game. As mentioned above with the Sergio Ramos comparison, the confidence seems similar and if he plays just a little like him then he'll be a favourite soon enough.

Early days and without seeing if he can adapt to the English game, he's no James Perch.

He looks a bit like Ramos , he gave a good interview, all things about which I give 0 fucks . I don't care how much he cost either (clubs in the big league are trousering so much money we're almost on the verge of fees being immaterial unless it's the real 100 million type players). Is he any good ? No one knows. We need proven Premier League quality. Lascelles isn't, neither's Clark, neither's Mbemba and Hanley's out the door. A signing's a positive but we've been so devoid of positive transfer news since last summer we're like a hungry man eating a cracker and acting like it's a 3 course meal .

Sergio Ramos :19:

All jokes aside, Shelvey looks like Kojak and those of us that remember the programme on a Saturday night will never forget the way he took down the baddies with a similar verbal sentence.

It was the 70's version of cous cous nonce*

Seems he's a good player.

But he's also French.

We need a good quality centre-back; Recent French signings have proved unable to stand more than 6 minutes at the club in the Premier League while performing at any decent level.

We'll just have to see, and hope Rafa's choice is better than those other Frenchies brought in recently.

To balance it, it can hardly be viewed as a negative, so it doesn't need dressing up. As ever, the proof will be in the performances and only then can I give an honest assessment.

I think only Colo was the last defender we spent around £10m on.
