Heard Sigurdsson is off to Everton for 25 million so whether that frees up James McCarthy considering our longstanding interest time will tell. We've made an enquiry about Josh King from Bournemouth but aren't going to pay silly money. From the same source have heard we may do a loan to buy for Loftus Cheek after going cold on Tom Cairney (Fulham want 20 million) and that apparently we're also monitoring the situation with Wilfried Bony.

Hull's relegation means Harry Maguire's future will be a move away from there this summer. We've had scouts looking at Bologna's Mattia Destro , Kieran Gibbs, and Lisbon's centre half Semedo . There's also been some paper talk about Phil Jones and of course our 6 million clause for Atsu expires tomorrow.

Sounds like a canny bit of work has been going on behind the scenes. Sigurdsson is a good player, i would have liked him to be on our radar but i also like McCarthy. I cant really comment on Josh King not really seen enough of him. I think Cairney should be in the premier league but that is daft money. Maguire i am undecided about, i like his physicality but he is not the quickest and looks heavy set but has had a good personal season in a relegated defence. He just sometimes reminds me of a S Taylor.
The two from overseas i dont have a clue about. I did like the idea about Mangala from M Citeh though. Jones isnt a bad link as when he is fit he is a good centre half .... when fit .

But cheers for the info Keggy

According to Sky, we're in talks with Atsu over making his move permanent for £6.2m.

According to Spanish media, we've activated Gabriel Pires's transfer clause of £6m.

A 23 year old Brazilian midfielder who plays in Spain for Leganes.

Again, we'll not know either way until the window opens.

If true (of course), this is where we have to trust Rafa.

Bringing in the right players, at the right price.

Reading between the lines, I think he'll get as much done 'under budget' while still getting players in to do a job, while saving the biggest chunk for where he needs to spend.

Kind of juggling a bit with his budget, versus getting the quality in decent quantity.

If he can nail some inexpensive targets early on, he can then go in harder for the expensive ones. Such as a top striker.

Reading Batshuayi could be a possible target..... i think we were once linked to him while he was at Marsielle . Like it to be true but alas i think he is happy where he is and probably be out of our price range.

West Ham are linked with a loan for him, so on that score we could be in luck. As for a sale, our ship sailed when Ashley's nose was turned at the price before he joined Chelsea.

You'd think they've learned now because before that there was Aubamemyang, Lacazette, Bas Dost, Gameiro and Giroud. All have seen their value soar since.

Aye players previously linked to us have went on to do pretty well which in turn increases their market value. To get real decent players who are proven at top level you are talking about approaching the 20 mill mark and over.
6-10 mill gets you and average player in todays market.
The players who seem to be a little more than just linked (Gray and this Brazilian midfielder) do not make me sit up and think yeah thats a statement there, we have done some good business.

Linked with yet more again today; new names.

Still waiting to see something more solid. Seems this Pires link is the strongest - possibly to do with him being within our price range.

Supposedly been allowed by Chelsea to speak to Tammy Abraham and we're linked with William Carvalho according to Portuguese media. They reckon we want to knock the £39m price down first.

The last bit will be right, £9m so no deal.

Newcastle and Chelsea have a decent relationship when it comes to transfers and Rafa has a very good relationship with the Chelsea hierarchy . I'd be amazed if we didn't loan one of their players but I'd heard Loftus Cheek. Papers are saying Abraham and someone else I know was saying it's the lad Lewis Baker.

Must be around 50 or so deals mentioned now.

Today alone there's Anita and Gouffran going, Hanley wanted by at least 4 teams including Aston Villa and Derby who will pay £4m but we want £5.5m, Mangala from Man City is being touted again, a highly rated 18 year old from Watford who is their young player of the season can be signed for buttons as he's yet to sign a professional deal. Dion Pereira is also linked.

There's also further talk of a Tammy Abraham season long loan, Clinton Mata from Charleroi is another supposedly wanted plus Inter defender Jeison Murillo.

It's getting beyond a joke now and there's still over 4 weeks left until the window opens.

More names to add include:

Frank Acheampong of Anderlect
Pepe Reina again
Ruben Semedo's release clause being £39m but they'll accept £17m
Mangala being subject to a £13m bid from us allegedly
Tom Lawrence from Leicester

Also linked is a highly rated Barcelona kid, Carles Alena who was nicknamed Maradona before being labelled the next Iniesta. Cant see this happening with Rafa's Madrid links mind.

Ryad Boudebouz is another name mentioned again with a part of French media reckoning there's a bid gone in.

It's common knowledge that we're only allowed a 25 man squad and we've had 3 times as many names linked.

Sources close to Mike Ashley indicate the Newcastle supremo refuses to be outbid for the services of World Cup winner, Pele.

Having appointed 80's comedian Mr Kinnear as 'football manager' in recent years, Joe was on hand to explain, between sips of Jack Daniels; 'anything can happen at this club, and I do mean anything. Hic. Listen, I've seen this fella play, Lepe, and he's a strong lad that knows how to play a bit. He'd look good in black and white, I'm telling you, to be fair though, that's all I've seen him play in'.

Another day and at least 5 more names are mentioned. Some are even labelled as exclusives.

Got another month of this before any movement can start.

Today's mentions:

Afriyie Acquah - Torino central midfielder. Price around £6m by also wanted by Juventus.

Kamil Grosicki - Hull winger. Watford are amongst the rivals for him.

Miguel Layun - Porto left back. Has played for Watford in the past but is supposedly interesting us, Roma and Espanyol.

Andrea Ranocchia - defender from Inter. Linked with Swansea and Olympiacos.

Jozo Simunovic - Celtic centre back.

working to a budget and most of the players linked are an improvement on what we have.
Spending fortunes on players doesnt always work out does it? examples include Owen to us, Carroll to Liverpool and Torres to Chelsea none of them could be described as a rip roaring success.

Agree that we should be looking to do business on players that can do a job for us, regardless of the fee.

If a player is available for say 5m, and the difference is little or none for someone costing 15m for the role required, then go for the cheaper option.

That'll free up cash for roles that there is no comparable cheap option.

Rafa should be able to bring in the 7 or 8 players he needs with 70m, plus what he gets for moving players on (and replacing them).

Reina will probably be the next in as Napoli have signed a new keeper. Rafa pretty much admitted the other week that he was interested for many reasons but stopped short in saying the actual words out of respect.

Could actually see him as the captain as well.

He's 34 which is still young for a keeper.

I dont rate any of our keepers because of the amount of areas that they lack in.

Distribution of the ball and the speed in which they do it is abysmal at times. Leadership qualities or ability to communicate is another.

Pointless having the best shot stopper if a better all rounder could limit shots by commanding his area and defence better. He'd get my thumbs up for relative buttons in something like a £1m - £2m fee.

I suspected before this move that Krul and/or Selz will be moved on.

If we bring in Reina, it's almost certain two will go.

Now if that is the case then in light of Elliot's recurring injury, it might be Krul and Elliot who are shipped out.

Leaving Reina, Darlow, Selz, and the highly-rated youngster as 4th place backup.

Again, there may be a further twist if Chelsea firm up reported interest in Darlow and back it with good money.

It does make sense to me that Rafa wants a trusted and competent stopper. Even if bringing in Selz so far has not been 'as desired'. But this was also the case with De Gayer at Manure, first season.

What also shouldn't be discounted is that Rafa will want a new spine that can communicate with each other. Reina has premier league experience and is fluent in English as well as his native tongue of which the staff are also.

For this reason alone, we can strike off many rumoured targets.

I think it would be a good move; Experience; Quality; A few years still ahead of him at the top; Would mean we could move on 2 'keepers, freeing up another wage slot.

As you say, knows the Premier League, and the language.

Looks like Sels and Darlow could be on the way out(according to the press), Woodman for another loan and that leaves Krul as third choice.
Foe me keeper is one area that does not need looked at, at the moment I think we have more pressing concerns in other positions.

Without doubt Pyrry, we have other positions desperately lacking that need fixing as a priority.

'Keepers I think is one of our stronger points - with one too many actually - and yet we are not 'outstanding' in this area either.

I would be all for bringing in Reina however, and moving on any two of Krul/Elliot/Selz.

Would prefer to keep Darlow and Woodman.

To be fair to the club, the prices are very good for Premier League football..............providing there is something good for the home fans to watch.

It's not good watching the top sides come to SJP to see world-class players hump us. But Benitez would not be staying if that were to be the case.

I'm more hopeful this season of something watchable, than for a while now.

For kids, it's a bargain. £137 for the season in the Leazes bottom tier and level 4 Leazes/Milburn corner or £171 for the rest of the Leazes or Gallowgate end.

Works out at £7.20 a game for the £137 ticket and £9 a game for the other. Less than a trip to the pictures and more memorable no doubt.
