The Rafa Benitez Thread

Rafa says there's no chance of him taking the England job if it's ever offered. Says he's just come here and he has a project.

One of the better reads from the ronny gill. A brilliant insight as to how Benitez is doing things.

In what was once seen as a hoodoo here, Rafa Benitez wins the manager of the month for October.

http://www.nufc.co.uk/articles/20161111/benitez-wins-manager-of-the...

Funilly enough, the two previous monthly winners this season have seen both their sides slide not long after winning it. Huddersfield got it in September for their exploits in the early season and Norwich got it last month.

Clever photo . Rafa has every key member of the coaching staff touching the trophy (although the grey haired guy at the back looks badly photoshopped) . It emphasizes his it's about the collective philosophy.

Rafa when asked about his thoughts on his first year here said we were going in the right direction.

When asked where he'll be in another year he said: I will be here tomorrow trying to win against Fulham and then after, we will see.

Least it gives plenty of scope for the media to get peoples knickers in a knot over the next few months.

Alex Neil has just been sacked by Norwich. Which surely gives some credence to the argument that Benitez is doing a canny job. Still hearing whispers that Benitez might pop for a Chinese in the summer.

Personally I reckon that Rafa is playing a good game in that he commits to nowt unless he gets certain boxes ticked. The longer this goes on and we gain promotion will surely crank the pressure up on the regime by the amount of folk that will be onside.

Some good stories around tonight.

Particularly liked the one about an ex player of Rafa's, who must be managing or coaching in Belgium and wanted to bring his players over here to watch a game. The bloke wanted 30 tickets but Rafa said it was impossible as the ground is full.

I can't see him fancying China in his old age. He's pretty much settled in the UK.

He's quite right to focus on the immediate future, as the job for this season is not done yet. Might not be until the last game.

He's a principled man - I'm in no doubt at the end of season review meeting with the fat-cuntroller, he'll state his case well - back me, for your own good, as well as that of the club.

He'll have a structured plan in place; along the lines of stabilise first season back, and achieve the correct balance. Then, window after window, strengthen the two weakest areas. Within the third season back, it can be a tilt at Europe.

He's a logical, methodical fella.

An excellent interview with Rafa on the official site today. Some of his explanations are top notch and ive had this feeling for a while but when he speaks, it's as if he's trying to sell something to Ashley like a working portfolio.

Loved this quote.

'Players are not a piece of furniture that you can just stick in one place. They are people who have families and when they aren't involved they have to be kept happy and we have done'

Sadly, Rytoon - fatty ISN'T going to part with £200m. Not even half that. The sooner that sinks in, and that there might be another way, the better.

Our sales will not generate that much, and if he only opens the biscuit tin to the tune of 60milion, its not enough. That amount will see is fighting another relegation battle. Twice as much investment will see us about mid table, where would be admirable in our first season back. (whoever the manager may be).

Net spend, £60m plus sales. Sales might get £20m total if Mitrovic is one of the ones to go, around £10m otherwise.

We'll finish 10th - assuming Benitez is still here.

You seem to be forgetting, there is a whole host of shit in the Premier League. It's only the top half-dozen or so, that are actually any good.

This team needs around 40-50 million spending on the defence alone, at least one quality experienced centre back will cost upwards of 20 million plus a keeper and some fullbacks with pace and quality (The 16 yr old Fulham left back's probably worth 20 million plus after yesterdays performance). We also need options in the middle other than Shelvey, again a premiership standard centre midfielder would be 20 million plus some creative wingers as Aarons seems to be permanently injured. Good strikers are worth their weight in gold so that will twice as much. £60 million will do nothing aside from see us head straight back down.

1: I disagree with what you quote needs to be spent.

2: What you quote we need to spend - we won't - not even close.

3: You don't HAVE to pay over the odds for players. There are players out there out-of-contract, nearing the end of their contract, not getting a game, not getting a start, at lower clubs that have bags of potential, players overseas that would love to be in the Premier League.

For £70m - you CAN get 7 GOOD Premier League quality players. Pick up one or two of them for nowt or next to nowt, means the average spend on players you bring in can rise.

And with 7 players brought in, supplemented by a youth player or two that can cut the mustard being brought into the 1st team squad, we CAN and WILL finish above the rest of the dross that is in the Premier League.

That is the last time I'm going to express this opinion - it seems people have already closed their eyes and ears to other options but spend big - which we WONT!

I think most of us know we won't spend big and Benitez will probably leave. I'm just saying we NEED to spend big, a good quality premier league player does not cost 10 million, Everton just paid 22 million for Schneiderlin, that's the standard of player you need to compete. You may get 7 players for 70 million, but they'll either be foreign and unproven or average and you'll end up in another painful season and a fight for survival.

If we go up then I think people are forgetting that the January window becomes more important to Ashley in the top league. He will spend in it to try to get us safe if we're at the bottom. This will be on top of whatever is spent in the Summer prior.

If we're relatively safe then the net spend will not be that high.

Or, just watching Spurs as an example, if the right people are doing their jobs correctly you could get Kane, Alli, Dier and Wanyama for a combined £20m.

(Ssshh, i never mentioned Sissoko)

We need a huge overhaul
I personally dont see the keepers as an area where we dont need to improve on atm.

right back yes we need one anita is not solid enough in that role.

left back yes we need one although i think Dummet gets a lot of stick unfairly in some instances we do need one to be our first team regular and Dummet to push that player.

centre half yes we need one possibly two depending on departures.

midfield ...jesus where do you start? I would only keep Shelvey, Ritchie and use Haydon as a sub. minimum 3 needed

attack yes we need two (keep Gayle and Perez) both as subs

possible sales some of the shite you couldnt give away but possible sales

Mitro 9 -10 hasnt kept his initial value in my opinion due to poor showing/fitness
Diame 3 found his level in this league without impressing
Mbemba 5 (wrong to get rid in my opinion) top player in the making but if Rafa stays he's off.
Hanley 3 few teams in the championship like him
at best 20 million in sales, at worst 15.
The club will struggle to get a fee for Colback, Selz,Gamez,Ameobi,Haidara,Lazaar and Goufron. Atsu back to parent club and Murphy holds his head up high as its only his age stopping him from staying if we get promoted.
13 out with youth/reserves promoted from within to cover 4 of them leaving 9 to purchase.

I like the calibre of player linked in Townsend, Macarthy and Maguire but that alone we have been quoted 45 million if the press is to be believed.

I wouldnt mind if Rafa stays him using his knowledge of players he has come up against this season ie Crainey etc. We will not attract any huge stars who cost the earth, the pool we will fish in will be players in the 10 mill bracket or just over . Minimum we need about 100 million plus sales. In the cup we played Hull, we were as a team full of confidence and they were really lacking in confidence. We lost that game on pens. still a loss, they have a new manager, new tactics and a spring in their step. They are currently third bottom and i am sure they would play us off the park if we met home or away next week.

We've Krul, De Jong and Armstrong to come back too. Difficult to see if / how they wil fit in.

Overhaul is required. But as has been pointed out a couple of posts above - you can get some real quality in, in numbers for a small outlay, as Spurs did in the quote........and then actually fuck things up by spending big, as they did.

Rafa simply doesn't trust Mbemba . He was given specific instructions by Rafa in how he wanted him to play the ball the in the games against Wolves in September and again against Blackburn in November and didn't even attempt to follow them. Be interesting to see if he's given a chance to show he can play as instructed now Clark's out or if Hanley gets a go.

I'd like to see him being the defending midfielder. That's how I'd have spent the time training him.

He's got to be better than Colbakck there already - plus he has a presence.

A half decent article from Louise Taylor for once. It's as if she's trying to change sides ahead of the Mackems impending relegation.

As usual, Rafa does his press conference, says the right things and calms it all down.

Says he's just getting on with things as it's happened before in football plus has spoken to Ashley. Has been congratulated and is having a meeting next week to discuss the future of everything.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if Pardew was still manager and was spouting the company line.
