That Rivière was even 5th choice does Carr no favours. His first choices might have been even worse.
Let's hope negotiations with Charnley don't forget on too long as is his normal way. Some other side could nip in if they don't sort this out quickly.

"Understand that the next stage of the talks are about the budget that the NUFC manager will get. Mike Ashley is heavily involved in that along with Lee Charnley but sources close to the discussions reckon it's now almost certain to happen.

Key to this has been Ashley's readiness to hand Benitez almost complete control.

Optimistic projection is done by the end of the week. More likely start of next week though."

It's at the lawyer/writing out written agreement stage. This is where we'll see a snag, if there is one.

Put the bulk order of beer on hold for now.

Oh well, as long as clauses like 'If Spain come calling for a sort list for the manager's job. after the Euros, I'll be off for an interview' are not inserted then so far so good.

According to the usual North East journo lot including George Caulkin etc, they reckon it's in it's final stages with all parties eager to get this done as soon as possible. The solicitors will be on daft pounds per hour more like.

I wouldn't wipe my arse with the Daily Mail and as they are not the preferred media partner I don't see how they got to know before Trinity Mirror. Lets wait until we have a more reliable source before we get too carried away.

He's been right every time from what i can gather. He was the bloke that had the argument with McClaren about what was going on in the dressing room.

Give it half an hour and Simon Bird will confirm.

Considering the club paid stupid money for shite like Remy Cabella and Florian Thauvin off the back of Carr's recommendation means he deserves stick.

Sir Laz - 17/5/2016 12:56

All this slating Carr off, people should rather ask themselves "How many of Carr's 1st choice targets were actually signed by the club " And I would bet that there weren't that many.

That has got me thinking Laz. It puts a different perspective on the incoming transfers but if Carr did have his first, second or even third choice knocked back why do it?

Spanish papers are talking targets now and they reckon our first signing is going to be 31, which is a turn up for the books. Former Liverpool player Daniel Agger who will be out of contract soon and leaving Brondby.

Still better than owt we've got I bet. Obviously we'll see but the sooner Rafa is confirmed, the sooner things will sort themselves out you'd think.

Should've signed Agger before he left Liverpool the last time. God knows what he's like these days. Didn't realise he was the same age as me mind. Expected him to be younger.

Interesting times ahead (possibly). My hope is that RB brings a bit of much needed professionalism & dignity to the club, both of which have been absent for far, far too long.
I'm still absolutely aghast though that Charmless is still in a job, his ineptitude has cost MA many millions & I can't believe he'd (MA) tolerate that.
Fingers crossed the supporters of NUFC finally have something to rest a few hopes on.

We are expected to believe that Ashley seemingly wants to give everything we want when he's tried his best not to provide that for years, sometimes at his expense.

Something doesn't feel right but you can understand why hopes will be built up. As a fan base it's like a loaf of bread to a bunch of starving people.

Still waiting for something to go wrong meself to like, I mean the only thing I will say is that Ashley was there himself Sunday and saw that keeping Benitez takes a lot of the pressure off himself, no protests and a good atmosphere, albeit helped by a ridiculous result, but nevertheless all down to Benitez. I can see that fat duplicitous scumbag promising Benitez the earth, using him for promotion and then going back on his word, engineering an argument once it's achieved.

I place absolutely no trust in Ashley. Nearly a decade of lies and back stabbing. I can't see him changing now despite rumours that SD are now going to be paying sponsorship and the club is going to start paying off his loan.

He hasn't earn't any trust thus far but he seems to be mellowing in all walks of life, with him dropping his `fit and proper' claim against David King, and he has also agreed to meet MP's at the House of Commons. Maybe he's now learn't that being a cunt effects the share price of SD with the value of his shareholding nearly halved in the last 6 months.

It's still a no-brainer employing Benitez after the visual lift it's given everyone.

Not only has it made relegation a distinct 2nd place or less important factor, it's also stirred the emotions of people who've given it up with talk of getting tickets replacing talk of pitch forks and voodoo dolls.

The spin off and increase in commercial and merchandise being another point but most of all the fact that it's Ashley's greatest chance of getting us back in the spotlight of the world, that being the premier league.

What's a few million for one year in comparison to learning a hard lesson and creaming it in, in future?

'Alleged', 'verbal agreement' and Ashley. 3 things I've learned not to trust.

I'm still at default position. We'll see.

Agger was a plant to get the papers to report on it and show them up, which seems a bit like defeating the object as they'll have had their 'clicks' from a free story.

I reckon we're hard to fool now anyway because we generally go down the 'wont believe it until it's on the official website' route now.

Still, he would be a decent enough fit and the calibre of player that we'll probably attract. Just got to see Rafa over the line. Until then, plenty can happen either way.

If he has agreed verbally, why has he not signed. The sooner the decision is made the quicker we can move on
Smacks of Charnley's pedestrian work and would not surprise me if it does not happen. I hope it does but Charnley should have paid the penalty for his crass handling of everything since he has been in place.

I don't like silences at SJP. The longer the contract remains unsigned the more chance there is of Rafa having his head turned. Unless that's the ploy to make them look like they are doing something, just like the Shearer episode.

The common sense factor says that Benitez and his associates will be going through the legal stuff with a fine tooth comb whilst making sure we have the best chance to resemble a normal football club. We also have to remember that there is that much wrong that it wont be a quick and easy fix.

On saying all this, we can be forgiven for not being extremely cautious.

I've heard he's at home on Wirral to talk it over with his family while his people go over the deal. May well be a week before it's rubber stamped. Who knows, Rafa could be using us as a stalking horse to flush other interest out Everton still have no manager and the situations at both Stoke and West Brom could be subject to change .

It's all about vision as well.

If Benitez is allowed to run us as a proper club, which is highly debatable considering Ashley's 9 years, then he needs to see where he sees us in 2 or 3 years. Then compare it to where he thinks the likes of the above mentioned clubs will be.

If he then thinks he's as good as a lot of people are making out then he'll stay.

Oh don't get me wrong I think Rafa is a genius and would love him to manage us permanently. Only manager to win all of the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. If you sign him you're essentially guaranteeing European football within the next few years. As ever this is Ashley and Charnley we're dealing with here, their ability to royally fuck up any positive situation is unparalleled.

This is supposedly going to go into another week. The longer this goes on, the more the comparisons with the Shearer 'appointment' that wasn't will be made and rightly so.

The fact that we have the history and warn about this sort of stuff makes us so negative in our views and we're expecting a snag but I hope if it does break down that the new realisation of what could have fixed the club can then be channelled in ruining it.

Yep, as someone suggested it could be Rafa's lawyers going through fattys con artists contract with a fine tooth comb, or as we've seen numerous times under Ashley, once they've realised the deceit and mistrust involved with working with him, anyone decent just laughs and walks away, in bewilderment of how this football club is run.

There's loads of permutations and it can be seen from both a positive and a negative angle.

The negative slant explains itself as we've done it for so long but a positive in it is if Ashley really does want the club to change, it wont be a quick process so the legal people will be to-ing and fro-ing the ideas and then it will have to be incorporated into the small print.

It's all well and good the grapevine saying that both parties are relaxed and they're just going on as if Benitez is staying but how can that be so if the worry is that another team can come in at any time?

Something's up somewhere.

If Benitez is given the job and full control then it's basically Ashley admitting he's been wrong and inept for the last 9 years, we all know that's not his style and that's why none of us are surprised at the wait 'to get this over the line' and the subsequent shite PR statement about how Dave Bassett was the one we wanted all along.

Ashley will know that Benitez gives him and his tat brand the best chance of progression in the pocket lining stakes.

I still think that Ashley wants it to happen but we have to remember he's clueless, so this could drag on and on.

If Benitez has given his word verbally I would be sure that he's a man of honour and would stick with that. However with the sewer rats running NUFC, I wouldn't give any credibility whatsoever to any verbal agreements that they enter into.

IT does not take that long to draw up a contract or sign a document stating that he will take over subject to conditions. They have had since last Wednesday evening 8 days to tie this up.
Charnley is hopeless in most aspects so you cannot be sure they won't f.ck this up, or that Benitas is waiting for a better offer.
Essential we get moving for next season.
