Yep, nail on the head. I can't get excited over Benitez because he should've been in charge way back when or someone of his calibre. Although it has been said by many Liverpool and now Chelsea fans that they can't stand him.

I'm not going to get excited and it disgusts me the way the Chronicle readers have all of a sudden forgiven Ashley again.

Think this is too little, too late. Although I'll happily be proven wrong. Still no defenders, still no strikers, still no keeper, still got Sissoko et al.

Whilst I feel some similarities in your view OM, I just don't see it as being 'too little'. I think we would have been hard pressed to pick a better choice if we were given free reign like we were in a Carlsberg advert, although it's still up to the same group of misfits that have us in 19th place granted.

I agree the whole appointment stinks of getting the best bloke in, in order to protect the riches of the league but something has to give on doing so because the club must be aware of the terms of their contract deal with Benitez and if he stays on survival, he'll be wanting big money for transfers and then some.

Since Ashley went on TV and said he was looking for a horse to bolt onto the cart some 10 months ago, he has pretty much kept to that word, whispers are out there that Benitez was a target for a certain period before Real came in, so it may have been a long time coming, we'll never know though.

It doesn't excuse Ashley for what he has done in the past, it doesn't excuse him for what he can potentially do in the future but then again, I dont give a shit about him, it's the club I follow and every employee that has been fucked over will have been compensated in some way.

We just need to enjoy the ride or get off. We've no choice but to.

Unfortunately if he had've wanted to bolt the horse to the cart we wouldn't be left with Elliott, Taylor and Dummett.

150 million was needed in the summer as bare minimum. Another 100 was required in January. The money spent is just what others had already spent as they galloped away from us. Trying to get to where others were 3 seasons ago is improvement but i wasn't enough so I can't agree in terms of he's stuck to his word.

I still cant believe that fatty has actually brought in a proper manager. i think nomatter if he keeps the club up or not i cant believe he would stay here, there must be loads of top clubs interested in him. all we have to dream of now if fatty selling the club to some other multi-billionaire Arabs that are nearly as rich as the man city owners.

I think OM' s post is pretty spot on as far as I'm concerned (there was a time when I never thought I'd be saying that :) ).
If MA has had a change of heart/direction I've no doubt it will be solely to suit himself. If that benefits the club & supporters then I'm ok with that. However, if this is a road to redemption then yesterdays events are one small, shuffling step on a journey that is many, MANY, miles long.
As regards the 'fickleness' of many, I think that is something we may have to reluctantly accept, by most of our own admissions we've found something else to partially fill the void, times have sadly changed, maybe we have to accept that.

A the end of the day he was never going to change tact until his business model was proven to be a total failure. The fact we are fighting relegation and the Chief Scout has spunked away 100m certainly focuses the mind. Yes we would prefer a new owner but in the meantime if he appoints a manager, lets him manage and gives him the funds to buy his own players it can only be a good thing. If we get success you never know the light might switch on that a successful football club is good for everybody.

Will he be forgiven. NEVER. Will I ever go back - NEVER under Ashley and probably not even under new ownership. Fooball has moved on and I don't think there's any place for dinosaurs like myself. However that doesn't mean I want to deny the future generations the pleasure of watching a successful NUFC. I might have grand bairns one day.

After everything Ashley has done to the club/city,what will it take for people to wake up and realise they don't have to endorse this shit.

Our grandkids should be guided by our experiences, not our weaknesses.
Encouraging any future grandkids of mine to enjoy footballing success is akin to grooming them imo.

A successful NUFC ? what does that even mean ?

Does it mean that the 52,000 who turn up at the SDA every other week would be justified in ramming the spineless claims back down the 18,000 plus who proudly boast they are the real NUFC fans throats ?

No disrespect to Vin or Bruce but I doubt NUFC exists anymore,we all in some way or the other helped Sky Ashley and Wonga destroy it.

Got give Benitez a chance. He should sort them out. If he is in charge of in comings and outgoing then that will be a plus. Doesn't make up for Ashleys reign to date but might be a step in the right direction if they let him get on with it.
At least we won't get post at home drivel which we had from the three previous managers

Sorry mate I can't give up on a 125 years of history just because of one bloke. One day football will come back to the working classes because the middle classes and football tourists will find a new toy to play with.

I watched the presser and probably analysed it too much as I was looking for slip ups.

He spoke well but the clause is a bit of a concern because it still allows Ashley to get rid under either circumstance and the manager role doesn't seem to be in concrete yet as he's here temporarily as a head coach until the appraisal.

The appraisal that Shearer will have been promised when he was here 8 years ago.

If mistakes have been recognised and rectified then this Summer is the first test of it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the clause or his job title. The club announced him as manager.
He said between now and end of season he is just a coach because the transfer window is closed. If he keeps us up I reckon he'll spend similar to what McClaren did over the summer, let's not forget that we brought in some decent players.. they were just sent out like headless chickens and it was obvious they were playing with the aim of a result of getting rid of Shteve, I fully expect them to be like a different team in the remaining games.

Find it very interesting that some of the players who were "injured" were suddenly fine to train.

The word is that the whole squad has reacted instantly to his high tempo training.

He likes to employ a 4-2-3-1 formation and picks players in pairs based on their attributes and how they compliment each other. So if a defensive or holding midfield player is a bit slow to cover ground, he'll be paired with someone far more mobile.

The likes of Marveaux who had been written off was involved heavily in training, perhaps he'll figure on the bench. Townsend trained fully, Cisse was back as well.

Although Colo was at training, i'm not sure how much he took part. Probably doubtful for Leicester.

I think with a full squad barring the long term injurues, he'll go with Elliott, then Janmaat, Mbemba, Colo and Dummett, Tiote and Anita as the two holding players, pushing Shelvey into the middle with Wijnaldum and Sissoko either side of him, and I have a feeling Doumbia or Cisse might get the nod over Mitrovic.

I'm not sure where Perez will fit into things, he could very well be a focal point of attack but Rafa has only ever played similar players together when it was a must, I think Gini and Perez are probably the most similar. When at Chelsea, he rarely picked all 3 of Hazard, Oscar and Mata, it was usually Oscar who took the bench, as the other 2 had far more contrasting attributes when it came to attacking play.

He'll pick the team based on how all these micro pairings create the overall balance of the team.. cannot fucking wait to see how the team responds to him.

For whatever reason this has come about, it's the appointment I've been screaming for since Pardew left. Couldn't be happier, it's like a fog has lifted.

I'm not expecting miracles, we'll probably still lose on Monday as Leicester look almost unstoppable but we'll have a go at least and the manager will learn about which players he can trust. It's a 3 team league and we have games in hand on them, win on Monday and we're 2 points clear of them, win in the derby and we won't look back.

I wanted Benitez here 2 seasons ago.Without doubt he is the best that the club could hope for.If he gets them to stay up then Ashley should back him to the hilt over the summer months.Been a long time coming but in my opinion he's without doubt the best to come here since Sir Bobby.

The first problem he needs to solve is left back. Dummett is out until April and Haidara is still not fit. The left back will be up directly against Mahrez so it's a position that's going to cause us huge problems. We could revert to three centre halfs with Janmaat and Aarons out wide but if Leicester go 4-4-2 it would be one hell of a risk. Most likely Colback will be left back which doesn't fill you full of confidence. Leicester have struggled against West Brom and Norwich in their last two home games, squeaked past Villa 3-2, Palace 1-0 and drew 0-0 with Bournemouth. They are not invincible by any means but you need 11 players at it from the start to have a hope in hell of getting anything. COYM.

In regards to Leicester I wouldn't be surprised to see someone deputized to cover the full back and man mark Mahrez. He did this several times at Liverpool using a Kuyt or a Zenden for example to cover frailties at full back . Problem is up here I can't really think of anyone who'd be up to the job . If we're assuming Colback goes to left back and Rafa can motivate Gouffran to the kind of graft he put in when first signed he's perhaps the main candidate. Anita also did play full back in Holland so possibly he could fill in at left back with Colback ahead.

Anita could be an option Keggy because with Mahrez being left footed he likes to come inside which should be on Anita's strong side. I do agree that we may need to sacrifice a player to cover our left back whoever it is but I hope Gouffran never pulls on a black and white again. Isn't that Saivet a winger converted into a midfielder which would be ideal if he's actually any good.

Can Janmaat play left back? That would create a few options, perhaps stick Saivet in at RB, Vern in the middle with Sissoko, then Wijnaldum, Shelvey and Townsend ahead with hopefully Mitrovic leading the line.. I still think the lad has goals in him, like his finish against West Brom, give him a chance like that and he'll score.

We don't really know the score about the injuries, or some players are fit enough to play. Leicester have 3 or 4 of the top 10 fastest players in the league so fuckers who are gonna break down trying to keep up should be left out imho.

Whatever your feelings regarding our current owner & his failings there's no denying the appointement of Benitez is 'interesting' at the very least.
Slightly 'curve ball' but I'd LOVE to know how RB goes about reinstalling confidence in players so lacking in it.
McC seemed full of positive/confident energy but failed miserably installing that confidence in his players.

What is interesting also is that Benitez prefers to play the 4-2-3-1 formation and that is how we've supposedly been set up since Parsnip and still used to this day at times.

See what Benitez can get out of it here.

He also likes to zonal mark which means the players will just pick whoever is closest to them instead of marking fresh air you'd think.

If we do get relegated HB we will implode (after this was confirmed in the Sunday Times today).
If Benitez keeps Newcastle up — he will leave if they are relegated, having confirmed the exit clause is in his three-year deal — he will have the power to reduce the influence of chief scout Graham Carr. Significantly, he has not even spoken to Ashley. They are matters, he said, for another day.

Rafa's thoughts also in the Sunday Times:
He was said to be surprised by the imbalance of a squad that did not have a left-back or a commanding centre-half, and was overrun with wingers.

For that he will find sympathy from McClaren, who could not exert the pressure to make the key signings — including a striker — that might have helped the club to avoid a relegation fight.

There was more for McClaren to contend with. He was handed a written warning in November, along with Paul Simpson, when the first-team coach spoke in a radio interview about the club’s recruitment methods.

There was an incident when the first-team squad would not get off the team bus to go for a walk with the club’s management. When a player walked down the tunnel during a game, TV cameras caught him saying: “No one gives a f***.”

It added to the sense that there was not full control, that McClaren simply had too many fights on his hands to deal with.

Looking at the table and the games we've got to play even bearing in mind the shit houses we have at the club a good manager should keep us up. Two games ago would have given the manager a bit more time but even so - Sunderland, Norwich, Swansea and Villa are the four clubs around us and if we can't beat those we don't deserve to stop up.

We haven't had a good manager in over a decade (Keegan's short stint excluded) so to be honest, it's impossible to gauge what sort of improvement he can get out of this bunch.

Any victories we've had in recent times have essentially been in spite of the manager.

Roll on tomorrow night.

Was watching Sky Sports News this morning and Ray Wilkins was saying something about the managerial situation that made sense in that the players may see the Benitez clause as a point to stop trying.

Basically saying that the break clause shouldn't have been put in and he should show commitment by setting an example to the team that even if they go down, he'll still be here to have a go and get back up.

On saying that, Ashley probably insisted just to keep the bill down next season if he leaves.
