NUFC v Arsenal Match Thread
29 August 2015 09:28 Post ID: #462537
We face another team that we usually get nowt off today, so 3 points would be a welcome change and a parameter to analyse in our supposed development.

With more attacking options and a changing shape that seems to be able to adapt to varying scenarios, it should make for a decent game.

I would read nowt in the stories of Arsenal being weak in defence because they wont be, what they will be though, is wary of the power and movement of the likes of Mitrovic in an area that has lacked since Shearer packed in, so that will be interesting and a first goal to us would be, to see how they adapt or react.

Im pleased the days of containment are gone and a little optimism about our chances having returned but know there's a long way to go in restoring anything to the club that has been lost over the Ashley era, if it ever can be but I dont dread the games like I used to. We're a work in progress.

Will we win? We've a better chance than last year but I reckon there's a red card or 2 in this one and a 1-1 draw.

We've been written off by absolutely everybody. If we were playing Bayern Munich, Barcelona or Real Madrid I could understand it but we are playing in a shit league dominated by some distinctly average teams.

PS - you can get 16-1 for a Toon win on nufc.com

I took us to win at 6-1 and i am quite confident ( watch we will get stuffed now) the 16-1 was a new customer deal but think the 6-1 is very generous considering arsenal have been shit.

Yet again starts with Anita and Colback, not necessary at home and Perez should start in place of Anita for me, deserves it after last weeks performance, has such a quick footballing brain and works his bollocks off, already looks like a good foil for Mitrovic, hope I'm wrong, but that could cost us.

Anita has been brilliant so far and is probably one of the first names on the team sheet - against less attacking teams I'd drop collback and yes, Perez would play. Pleased that he's put mbemba back in the middle- that team looks like it could cause some real bother.

Disagree on Anita, think he's average at best, despite the work he puts in. We could do with Ozil being fit, fucking Walcott loves playing us.

No complaints about the card. Sissoko walking a tightrope too. Ref is doing nothing to calm things down though

Headless chicken. No use to us if he is going to continue like he has started. Sissoko as well getting booked early on, they have not got any brains.
McClaren needs to get a reliable striker in before the deadline because miter itch is not going to complete many games

Was never a red that, he was going for the ball and it wasn't malicious, wouldn't expect any common sense from Mariner, we'll end up with 8 here.

This is exactly the kind of game that makes you grow tired of football, Mariner stopping it for every little fucking niggle, let it flow and a bit of contact for Christs sake.

We're playing better with 10. Mitrovic needs to be eased into things, he's trying too hard to win everything and whatever way he was built up before his debut, as in "he has a bit of the devil in him" has obviously given him a reputation before he's even started.

It was a red card going by the rules, however there is no consistency in this, some refs give them, some don't. Especially so early in the game, it wasn't intentional and the player wasn't hurt, so some common sense should prevail and give the lad a strong telling off.

Mbemba is a class act and Thauvin has already done more than Cabella did in his whole time with us.

Would maybe bring on De Jong on for Colback, not that he's done anything wrong but Anita has played well and Wijnaldum could drop back a bit and do the same job. Sissoko is just a clumsy moment away from an early bath so that needs to be looked at too.

He came out with a belter at around 41:00 minutes after mbemba beat 4-5 Arsenal players.

"When you pull the black and white shirt on you have ambition and desire"

He's obviously not including our kit wearing sdu support.

After seeing another replay of the Mitrovic red, it was a bad challenge but it didnt have the force to be worthy of red imo, on the positive, we have defended really well as a team like we did last week, only early days in the season but this team looks a little more organised and able to defend and work as a team, we look exposed on the flanks because we are defending a bit closer together in the middle trying not to get spread too much, Arsenal have failed to really take advantage of that, if they do in the second half we will get beaten 3 or 4-0,

Well I guess as last week, the positives are that it looks like we've a decent back 4 although light on backup, that team would've folded embarrassingly the last couple of years. Negatives are the two in the centre mid have no pace between them and get overrun by quicker and stronger midfields all too easily. Perez, De Jong, Aaron's all should be starting ahead of either Anita or Colback, Anita for me personally, especially at home.

Ref was a disgrace. If can take any positives from that, the performance is a million miles better than anything we showed last season. I still think we're to play our strongest side so a win will be a matter of time.

I agree, a Pardew or a Carver team would have capitulated, there at least looks to be some cohesion in the way we are playing, especially at the back

Well we are down to the same strikers as last season and are an Mbemba injury from the same defence. We didn't cave in a la Pardew but if you can't keep 11 players on the pitch you aren't going to win many. Our diciplinary record of late is embarrassing.

More red cards than any other team in the league in the last year.. Mitrovic being banned could maybe be a blessing.

Mbemba, Thauvin and Wijnaldum are quality. Mbemba being the stand out signing, the lad is a beast.

Anita and Colback are basically doing the work that one very good defensive midfielder should be doing so we're essentially down to 10 men as it is with that tactic.

What,a million miles better than the 2-1 defeat of a previously undefeated in 14 premier league games Chelsea ?

What about the 0-2 win against Man City in the Capital one cup,was today's performance really a million miles better ?

It's not what I saw.

Poor discipline and we still need more players. Colback and Anita too small for dominating midfield. Perez should start because we have little goal threat against good sides. It will take time and we are currently bottom three which many expected with our starting fixtures.
Taking a chance if we don't bring in an out and out striker because we currently have Cisse who is finished and Mitro who will spend more time off the field than on if he carries on.
Up to McClaren to sort it out.

From what ive checked on, today was his 5th red and what's looking like his 10th overall suspension, that said, on the balance of fair refereeing, today's was never a red.

Watched the Spuds match tonight and Dier put a challenge in on Cleverley. Yes, Dier touched the ball first but took the player out and he was carried off. A foul? No, but I suspect Dier knew what he was doing. Mitrovic needs to know he is a marked man since that challenge against Southampton.
