How many players have the club been linked to since the begining of June.
By my reckoning it is now upwards of 20.
Is anyone keeping a record regarding potential targets ?

The Mag keep refering to it and im sure it'll be approaching 80 players by now.

Even NUFC.com have it at 25 and that part of their site hasn't been updated for a week.

Be interesting to see a comparison, per window, of players linked against actual signings. I reckon the success rate of rumours will be under 1%

Maybe if the club moved the line from outer Mongolia closer to tyneside they might have more success in getting players over it.

As is the case with Austin, the club have to lodge an acceptable bid first before a line can even be thought about. It may as well be on the moon under this shower.

Absolutely. While the ragman continues to run the club as a cut price shop, buy in as cheap as possible and make a profit, then the line simply doesn't exist. My hopes continue to be: either he has a revelation and changes his business model (you have to speculate to accumulate) or he prices the club reasonably and effects its sale to a purchaser who understands how to make a club successful both financially and competitively.

Or he could just tell Sports Direct to pay £160m for their free advertising - 8 years at £20m - pay off his loan of 130m and put the club up for sale for 150m. He'll still be into profit.

Of the 80 odd players linked, I reckon we'll be pushing it to say that any more than 5 of them are realistic signings.

The majority are blind alleys that the club have no plan to sign but will either allow the media to insinuate that we are or 'leaks' will come out that we just couldn't get them over the line.

Once the smoke clears, it'll be the usual gamble. Under a different coaching set up though, we may just get a couple of winners.

None of the top 4 have really made any significant moves yet, being realistic, a club in our position will be waiting for them to do their business so we can feed off the scraps after.

Promoted clubs tend to do their deals early, only Liverpool of the higher up teams have been busy. And Fuck knows if they're being prudent or not with so many new faces.

With the regime's track record, we can speculate until the cows come home and still know that it's all about keeping as much cash in the fat man's pocket.

History would point to us using the old jedi mind trick of pretending to bid before bringing in unknowns for buttons but and it's a massive but at the minute. If Ashley has somehow seen the error of his ways and he realises that spending cash to keep away from losing his gold mine here, then the date of July 1st will see movement.

The main reason being that contracts generally start from that point or end the day before thus saving loot and the other reason being that it takes the heat off a bit as too much heat will threaten the existance of his cushy number.

If nowt happens next week then something's up.

Agreed. I'm still taking a far more backseat view of things. If Carver was still here I'd have just cut my losses but I just have an interest to see how this is all going to play out. But I'm still just as happy to wash my hands of it if it's going to be more of the same bullshit.

The last few seasons have taken their toll, on all of us I think.

It is interesting, probably moreso because we're rid of the shite coaching set up, although the regime have a lot to prove by actions.

The media though, have proven to know just as much as us when it comes to the toon and the Daily Star takes the biscuit tonight with contradictions galore.

Spot the difference.

Well I suppose I mean the "royal we" but everyone has their own perspective.

Hope was stripped away a long time ago.. I'm past that now, it's more just a curiosity.

The coaching set up could work wonders.. nobody can say with any surety one way or the other. And we can only guess as to what the club are going to do.

But as I said before.. this season is more important than others because of that TV deal next year. Ashley literally cannot afford to miss out of that gravy train. And that's the only reason he'll invest, we all know it's not for sporting reasons like any normal club

West Ham have just confirmed they've spent an eight figure sum on Dmitri Payet from Marseille. Where that leaves their transfer budget and or wage structure would say to me they're not in for Austin or they're moving on a high wage earner or two thinking Carroll/Nolan/Downing as being the obvious choices.

They've just been given a brand new stadium at the taxpayers expense so they'll recuperate that money once attendances shoot to 50k plus.

"The cost of transforming the venue into a stadium ready for football has reached £272m.

Of the £272m total transformation costs, £15m is being provided by West Ham United football club, who are occupying it from next season, with £1m coming from UK Athletics.

Mr Bryant told MPs the total spend on the venue would reach £700m, more per spectator than Wembley stadium, and more over budget than the total cost of converting the 2002 Commonwealth Games venue for use by Manchester City."

That's got to be bent, hasn't it? The porn boys must have stuff on Boris and his Government chums.

Currently Wet Spam get a bit over 34,000. Seriously, do you think they'll fill it?

It'll be a gradual process for them . Spurs should be worried, because it'll eat into their fanbase in time .

Manchester City were also beneficiaries of a stadium from a sporting event . The council house local Manchester United fans call it .

I'd love to see a new ground built some day. With the right benefactor running things..

Is there any other land suitable for a stadium though? I guess if SJP was ever demolished we'd be sharing with the smoggies for a year or two

When the original idea to move the ground a few hundred yards forward into Leazes Park was first mooted, I was dead against the plan due to the history etc or feeling of attending the shrine as it was known to me then but thanks to the Ashley years, Im all for fumigation or shifting away from any memory of his reign.

The reason the original idea was blocked was because the green brigade got a campaign going which 'conned' people into thinking that the town moor was going to be dug up. The town moor, for those that know the city, is nowhere near where this ground was planned and it still to this day just has the odd cow and student wandering across a waste of space basically.

Apart from that, I could think of loads of places to build a new one because existing buildings get knocked down all the time, for example the old hospitals.

Even up my way, which is only 5 miles North of where the ground is, is a 50/50 split of countryside and building. Got A1 and A19 links as well.

I agree with the sentiment, it's like a shrine overlooking everything but it's been tainted beyond recognition.. if I had a few billion and bought the club the first thing I'd do was look at alternative accommodation. Something that would be there for generations..

I can't agree with this lads. Every city needs some green in it for people to get out and about, a run, a cycle, a kick about with the kids. The history of the Town Moor, owned by the freemen should keep it that way and rightly so. Leazes park is a cracking bit of land, in the heart of the city and it should stay that way.

As for a bigger ground, Freddy Shepherd had got as far as plans to develop the Gallowgate which would have made the capacity 70,000 ish. Then the stinking leach sold the land and hawked away our future growth. There is nothing the matter with our current ground apart from 1000 blue and red stickers. It's unique, impressive in its position and in spite of everything, still fills me with awe. I just won't set foot in the place anymore.

The ground needs to stay where it is. If you brought safe standing in the ground capacity could easily be raised to 65K or 70K. It works in Germany so know reason why it shouldn't work here.

If you add the fans that have walked away (20-30,000), at least under the AShley Tenure, bring a team that wants to win something to the table, you could add another 20,000 in my book.

A 100,000 seater stadium should be the minimum, if ever a re-development were looked at.

The fact the fat cunt sold the land behind the gallowgate end (where did that money go???), shows him fort what he is, a leech, yet people still go, its in their hands......

Aye but the bit that is just North of Leazes park is just wasteland with cows in it. The original proposal was to still have the same amount of greenery and plant more trees and was win win when I think back on it, although for the reasons I mentioned earlier, was against the slight move.

Think we got sidetracked there.

Paper gossip: Newcastle are to make a £12m bid for Anderlecht's 20-year-old striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serb scored 23 goals last season. (Daily Mirror)

Southampton, Sunderland and Newcastle are all thought to be interested in Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar, 30, whose contract expires at the end of the month. (Birmingham Mail)

Whatever you do, don't hold your breath...

The only player we've been linked with that I would be genuinely happy with it the lad from Monaco. Cracking defender. A bit like Alex who used to play for Chelsea except far more mobile. Would literally put his body on the line for his team..

We've bid 12m apparently (yes huge pinch of salt there) but his club want more, and they'll get it too.

Back to the ground issue. The Gallowgate is already lop sided as it is. If the nearby park is a no go, then the only way to do it properly would be to share a ground for a year or so and knock the stadium down and start fresh.

It was never built with that many in mind so the concept of increasing capacity is flawed.

And The Blaydon Races has to go, it must be the worst club song by a country mile..

The general pattern is that we're speculated to be interested in targets that are 'sought' after, hence giving the impression that we tried.

Nowt's changed.
