Shearer: 'I'm Knackered!'

The idea of Shearer extending his career by yet another year was mentioned by Graeme Souness before he was sacked. But the then United boss was grasping at straws desperate to make himself popular with the fans who wanted him out.

But the Magpies' number nine says he would not be physically capable of performing for another year at the top level.

Shearer: 'No, I wouldn't be able to. My body wouldn't allow me. Well, that's life. If that happens, it happens. It's been a great ride, whatever happens in the last three months. We've had our ups and downs but you'll always have that in life; it's how you deal with the setbacks and come back that matters.'
