'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Shearer Warning To Freddy

Alan Shearer says a foreign manager could be the answer to Newcastle's problems, but he was quick to point out what we already know ... chairman Freddy Shepherd MUST get it right this time!

Shearer: 'As far as I am concerned it's not important if the next manager is British. It just has to be the right man.

'I don't know what list they have but they just have to look at the best possible candidates to take over whoever they are. They need to get the appointment right, there's been a lot of managers at Newcastle and the next one is a very important decision - fingers crossed they will go on to win silverware.

'I'd assume they're working very hard behind the scenes but I think they will take their time if they need to. We've got to go out and be professional under Glenn Roeder who is looking after things now. We have to do the best we can until someone is appointed.

'I won't be the manager. That is for someone else to come in and do and hopefully do really well. I am finishing playing in May and I will have time with the family, play golf, do the media work and carry on taking my coaching badges.'
