Legend Alan Shearer has given his blessing and his backing to Steven Taylor despite the defender`s torrid time of late. Speaking at his latest DVD launch he said:

'I haven't got any advice for Steven, but I was pleased to see him back in the team. I thought he and Nicky Butt were probably the best players against Portsmouth. I know he scored the own goal, but the game was lost long before that. It wasn't in his favoured position of centre-half, but fingers crossed he'll stay in and do well. He's a local lad and I'm pleased to see him doing well.'
