'If It's Football, It's Vital'

All about the kids

With Big Sam having already outlined the fact he is disappointed with the level of quality coming out of the UK academy systems, it was interesting to hear from Academy boss Joe Joyce providing his version of events with what is happening at Little Benton. Speaking to the Chronicle he said:

'Our policy has been to find the best local talent. But we have also had some overseas youngsters come through as well. We have had Matty Pattison from the age of 14 and Frank Danquah from the age of 15, as well as Kazenga LuaLua, who now holds a British passport which makes him eligible for England. The policy is to find and develop the best local talent, but having foreign players here can improve the quality of the local lads. In one way it raises the bar for them and increases the competition. We know that clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea have recruited from overseas, too, and every big club will do that. But our aim is to find the best local talent.'
