Shearer 'Experience Doesn't Matter'

Alan Shearer does not think the next England manager needs to have much experience.

Shearer, who claims it would be 'a bit premature' for him to be linked with the job, points to Holland's Marco van Basten and Germany's Jurgen Klinsmann as examples of leading players who have recently been appointed national coaches.

Shearer: 'They are both doing reasonably well so I don't know how important that is. People will say he should be English but we want success. Ideally it would be with an Englishman, though.

'The job is about getting results. It did not affect us when Terry Venables announced he was standing down as England boss ahead of Euro 96. Nobody really expected it to be honest but I am not surprised by the outcome. And no-one knows yet whether it is the right or wrong decision - only time will tell.

'Fingers crossed, if England go on and win the World Cup then it will be right. If we don't, then people will say it was wrong - we have to wait and see.'
