Shoreying up the defence

According to the Currant Bun this morning, Reading left back Nicky Shorey heads up the hotlist for shoring up the problem left back slot. Ever since dual Frenchies Oliver Bernard and Didier Domi decided to do Judas sized bunks and pray in the showers at other clubs, we`ve been trying to fill the role with wastrels (Babayaro and Carr), triers (Ramage and Hughesie) and kids (Huntington and Edgar) with little or no continuing success.

Big Sam`s first port of call seems to be putting an end to this recurring nightmare. With Baines apparently ruled out for being too small (cue Roberto Carlos and Ashley Cole questions) Shorey seems to fit the bill. £6m is being mooted.

I personally think that the height talk is a smokescreen and no more. You want your fullbacks to be small and fast, not tall and lumbering. Allardyce is playing for time while this takeover drags on.
