'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Oliver Shames Souness

Chronicle reporter Alan Oliver had a laugh when Graeme Souness said last week that he was 'Newcastle's Greatest Fan', pointing out that (unlike Sir Bobby Robson who never missed a reserve game) Souness rarely watched his reserve side. However, it seems Souness has had a change of mind about visiting Kingston Park.

Souness was furious - and so too was chairman Freddy Shepherd - when the Chronicle revealed last Wednesday that neither he nor any of his four assistants Alan Murray, Terry McDermott, Dean Saunders and Roy Tunks were at last Tuesday's reserve game with Wolves at Kingston Park. He said on Friday: 'Do you think I need to see my players in a Reserve game to understand what I've got or haven't got?'

However, Souness and his four coaches were at Kingston Park last night where United beat Liverpool 2-1, leaving after 71 minutes.

Good on you Oliver ... a man of the people!
