'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Roeder on various developments

On Duff to the mackems:

"I was not surprised about the speculation, I was surprised it was Sunderland to be truthful, but when I thought about it I thought well perhaps not. They are local rivals, Irish manager, Irish chairman I suppose it sort of makes sense. And yet things like that I just let wash over top of my head but I do have to say something about it and there isn't any chance whatsoever of Damien Duff playing for Sunderland next year.'

On the day we take on new 32 year old trialist Bulut:

'I am looking to bring in players who are under 25 and whose best days are in front of them, not behind them."

On football violence:

"They are not the real football supporters, but they will use the club they allegedly support as a vehicle to go out and be violent, and we have got to be mindful of that. Sometimes, we say blame the clubs, but lots of clubs do everything within their power to make sure there is no violence in and around their ground. But if there is a group of people who want to make trouble, what are the clubs meant to do?

You punish the clubs at times when they have done everything they could. What about punishing the perpetrators, really punishing them, instead of threatening the clubs with fines or losing points? The clubs can only do so much. Where has self-control gone in the world? Football has become around the world such a focal point in people's lives, people who want to be violent will use their local club as a means to be violent.'

All well and good what Roeder says about football violence but has he taken the time to find out what happened? As much as i'd like to thump spurs and man utd fans (!!!!!) it looked like the police were the thugs last week, the English are treated like 10th rate citizens in Europe and it looked to me to be a disgrace. Maybe roeder and the other managers should start sticking up for the fans instead?
