'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Moncur on Europe

Fairs Cup winning captain Bobby Moncur has pleaded with the current team to take away his history of being the last Newcastle player to lift a major trophy. Speaking to the Chronicle he said:

'No doubt about it, I would love Scott Parker to take the title from me. I never thought when we won the Fairs Cup in '69 that we would still be waiting for the next one in 2007. And I say that with the greatest of respect too, because we have had some great years under Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan since then.

This year Newcastle have a real chance, a genuine chance, to do well in the UEFA Cup. United are in the last 16 now and although it is an achievement to get this far, for me the tournament starts now. They played some tough group games against Palermo and Fenerbahce but this is where it starts for me. Being an underdog will help Newcastle actually.

When we went all of the way in 1969, we were never favourites in any game. We were always underdogs and it proved to be a good weapon for us. There are still some good teams left in the competition but Newcastle will be quietly confident.'

I hope the boys can do it, lets face it NUFC have won jack in 40 yes 40 years. Which for a club that gets 50k plus gates is unbelievably poor. Mind you my hometown club are even worse.
