Smoggies Speak: Southgate

Speaking ahead of this afternoon`s game Southgate goes all Keegan on the Boro fans and the inferiority complex comes right to the fore:

"It quite possibly gets up the noses of the supporters and me that Newcastle are always considered to be the biggest and most successful club in the region and we're looking to change that. They have a bigger stadium and they get more fans every week. Historically they have had more success, but in the last couple of years we have closed the gap and we have competed with them. They have already lost at our place earlier in the season and their supporters will be desperate not to get turned over again.

It's a very big game, we know that. We know if we win we will rise above them in the league, but we are just looking at this game, not what might happen after it. It's a big enough game to keep us occupied for the time being. We have a lot of local kids in the team and, to use a phrase from a former Newcastle manager, they would love it if they went there and beat them.'
