£100m of reasons for further Toon frustration

Following the announcement of the latest batch of live TV fixtures, the club are now set to earn more than £100m from TV revenue in their first season back in the Premier League, according to the Chronicle.

Considering the lack of transfer funds that were available to Rafa in January, it`s even more frustrating considering Ashley promised that anything the club earns whilst being in the top flight would be reinvested into the squad.

The Chronicle say that the TV money could be added to the transfer budget in the summer, and increase the paltry £40m our manager was given at the start of the campaign, but that does seem to be heavily dependent on the owner keeping his word.
There is no doubt that even without additional investment from the club`s board that the sizeable revenue from the Premier League TV deal would give the club quite a significant boost in spending power, if we stay in the division.

Smaller clubs like Watford, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth all had much higher net spends than in us last summer, and that was because they have reaped the benefits of TV rights from an extended stay in the top flight.

All things being equal then, we should be seeing some of that money being reinvested in the playing squad if we do remain a Premier League team. The big mitigating factor in all this though is the takeover.

Uncertainty over who will own the club means any spending by the club is not guaranteed. Especially as no bidder has matched his valuation of the club, there could be cause for concern that Ashley would look to keep the additional revenue, rather than allowing it to be spent before the club is sold.

It was already a big gamble not to give the gaffer any funds during the January window with the club`s status in the Premier League not secure, but that would be compounded if we can`t spend in the summer either. We can only hope that if Ashley stays he makes the TV money available to the manager.
