Newcastle's Owen steps up training

Michael Owen has started running in training for the first time since his the operation on his cruciate ligament.

Owen today stepped up his training regieme and is still hopefull that he`ll be able to return this season.

Owen said: I haven't had any setbacks. Hopefully I can return this season, but it could be next season,'

But Toon boss Glenn Roeder made it clear that Owen would not be rushed back to action.

He said: 'With someone like Michael Owen, it is best for us not to say `We believe he will be back on this specific date',' he said.

'Because he is a world-renowned footballer, if he does not make that date, then all hell is let loose and he has had a setback.'

So he's all set to relaunch his career with Celtic, then? Should be good seeing him playing alongside Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink ;-)
