Rafa Eyes Up Another Keeper
Last Summer saw us heavily linked with Pepe Reina and Willy Caballero with both players looking to move on.
Amidst rumours of talks dallying and Caballero moving to Chelsea, the Reina talk continued throughout the season break before it amounted to nowt.
Reina was said to be unhappy with his club but we were very slow and inactive in the transfer market just gone, so he stayed although how serious we were in wanting him is unanswered at this time.
What is certain though, is that we do need another goalkeeper. There may be many of our fans on the varying forms of social media who see other wise but it's a weak part of our side.
Shay Given spoke on the Sky Sports programme that preceded our game at Chelsea and he said he couldn't understand why Rafa dropped Rob Elliot for Karl Darlow but for anyone that watches us live or anyone that has any decent knowledge of football, will surely realise how poor we've been in this department.
Devoid of speed, distribution and command of the area to name just a few areas of weakness. That's before the factor in what confidence the keeper gives to the rest of the defence.
The Chronicle mentioned Iker Casillas again today after his name was linked with us in the foreign papers over the weekend but it's easy linking names to an obvious vacant position.
With an alleged takeover being in the offing clouding everything like it's intention, probably. Business has to go on and the keeper situation may not be as desperate as a striker, number 10 or left back but it's still important.
It will depend on how many peanuts the club gives Rafa to spend although we've said many times before that this only attracts a certain sort.
