Deal Tied Up For Newcastle
There's been talk for ages over Jamaal Lascelles getting a contract extension and Rafa Benitez said it was very close just last week.
Today saw confirmation that our club captain was involved in extension talks with Newcastle confirming the news on their official website.
Newcastle announcing that Lascelles was tied up until the Summer of 2023 with him getting a new 6 year deal.
Lascelles joined us originally back in the Summer of 2014 but was loaned back to his former club, Notts Forest. It was a move that was done in tandem with Karl Darlow as they signed for something like a combined £7m transfer fee.
Having a bit part when he came here full time in the following season, it wasn't until Rafa Benitez came near the season end that Lascelles started to feature more with his leadership coming to the fore.
A good season in the championship before injury played a part in cooling his jets, Lascelles has started this season very well with goal line clearances and a couple of headed winning goals playing their role in him being muttered for international recognition.
If the likes of Micheal Keane of then Burnley, can see a move to Everton arise for £30m then a player like Lascelles would be worth similar on the back of similar performances, if not better. Hence the reason for a new deal.
Speaking of the new contract, Rafa Benitez was quoted on NUFC.co.uk as saying:
As soon as I made the decision to make Jamaal the captain of Newcastle United, he rose to the challenge and he has developed as a player and a character.
I would like to congratulate him on his new contract with the club, it is very well deserved.
