New Number Nine? Problems Ahead

It is hardly surprising that Graeme Souness wants Alan Shearer to stay on at St James' Park, because it looks as though he will have a problem when the GOALden Boy does hang up his boots. He would also like a striker in January to compliment his impressive Michael Owen and Alan Shearer strike axis, but with funds tight at St James's Park, his planned swoop for French international Nicolas Anelka is well off the mark.

The Newcastle manager wants the Geordie public to see how good Albert Luque can be when the player finally gets his arse into gear. But the latest offer from Real Madrid could bend his arm because he knows very well that, short term at least, Anelka would be a hit on Tyneside.

Having spent £50m during his time as Newcastle manager, Souness is due to discuss transfer funds with chairman Freddie Shepherd in the next few days, but has already been told he will need to do some wheeling and dealing to raise money.
