Newcastle: New signing soon.

Glenn Roeder has announced that Newcastle are close to making their first signing of the transfer window.

And although he won`t be drawn on a name he has confirmed that it will be a loan deal, and perhaps more importantly, that the player is an international defender.

Roeder said: 'We are talking to the player's club and we are hoping they will release him to come here, and we will find out in the next 48 hours.

He also hinted that if the loan period was a success, a permanent deal may follow: 'We know all about him and his playing record but we still want a look at him with the view to a loan deal until the end of the season.'

The signing of a quality defender will be a great boost to a side that has been so depleted by injury.

But Roeder will know as well as the fans that just one signing won't be enough if Newcastle are to sneak a European place this season.
