'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Ramage: 'We Are Still United'

Although the 1-0 UEFA Cup victory over Palermo in Sicily provided under-pressure manager Glenn Roeder with a huge boost. It was back to square one on Saturday evening when United hit rock bottom.

The Magpies have not won a league match since September 17 and have taken just two out of 21 points available since to slip into the relegation zone.

United wade into a tide of criticism, but defender Peter Ramage says the flak has simply served to increase the sense of togetherness within the squad.

Ramage: 'In a way, it is making us a little bit stronger because we are wanting to stick two fingers up at all the critics who are hanging around us. It is bringing us closer and closer together. There is good banter among the lads.

'It is very tough, but we know we are playing well and we know sooner or later, we are going to turn it around and we are going to climb up the table.

'There are a lot of games to be played yet - we are still less than a third of the way through the season. We know once we turn it around, we will be back up there.

'It has been tough on the players, but it has been even tougher on Glenn Roeder. He came in last season and did an unbelievable job to get us into Europe this year. All the players are fully behind him and fully determined to turn it around, not just for him, but for the club in general.'
