Shola Finds A Club

Shola Finds A Club

Released Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has eventually found another home after ending up signing a one-year contract in South-Eastern Turkey.

The Mackem slayer signing the ink on the dotted line for Turkish second-division club Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor, which are based just North of Syria of all places.

Shola had been a free agent since he was let go after spending 14 years on the payroll which included coming through the ranks and had at one stage been speculated to resign back here after still training with the club after the Summer break.

Gaziantep's official website had a statement on which read:

We want to establish an ambitious team in the league this season, and a strong team continues to strengthen by adding players.

We have therefore tied Nigerian striker Shola Ameobi - from one of the strongest teams in England, Newcastle United - to us for one year.

Shola was a 1 goal for every 6 game striker here and apart from the humerous mockery he got, he wasn't a bad player, just unlucky to have suffered some injuries early in his career which limited his career and movement on the pitch.

Aside from that though, he still made 397 appearances (including as sub) for us, scoring 79 goals.

He's probably best remembered here though for his ability to find the net against our neighbours down the road, scoring 7 times and only bettered by legend Jackie Milburn.

He is also our 2nd highest European scorer with 12 goals
