Of the 55,000 runners entered in this year`s Great North Run (Sunday 15th September), more than 100 will be helping raise funds for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Most will have a personal reason to support a charity that is helping find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer. For some, the challenge will be to beat a personal best, while others are simply looking to successfully complete the famous 13 mile course.
Two runners tackling the run for the first time this year have identical reasons to run in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
David and Michael Plummer, aged 17 from Heddon on the Wall, are the twin sons of Professor Ruth Plummer, Sir Bobby`s oncologist, a trustee of his charity and director of the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre.
Pupils of Dame Allan`s Schools, David and Michael are undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, which requires at least six months physical activity. The pair decided to channel their efforts into something that would also help other people and choosing which charity to help was an easy decision.
David says: "We`ve known about the work of the Foundation since its launch because of mum. She tells us all about the projects it`s funded so running for this charity was an obvious choice for us.
"Other than shorter junior runs, we`ve not done an organised run before. If I get around 1 hour 45 I`ll be really pleased but anything around 2 hours would be great."
Michael adds: "We`ve been getting in lots of training around home near Heddon. It`s a great place to run, really lovely and lots of hills to test our legs on. Hopefully we won`t find the course too bad and we`ll give it a really good go."
Sir Bobby`s family, Professor Plummer and volunteers will be in the Charity Village at the finish of the run to welcome back Foundation runners.
Professor Plummer is looking forward to thanking everyone who is helping raise money for the Foundation, which Sir Bobby launched in 2008 to help raise money to equip a Cancer Trials Research Centre.
She says: "My daughter and I are looking forward to seeing the runners come in. I`ve no doubts it will be a very special atmosphere with so many people giving their all for their chosen charities.
"I`m very proud of Michael and David. It was an idea they came up with together and I`m glad their running will help other people through the work of the Foundation."
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation funds projects within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that directly benefit cancer patients from across the north east and Cumbria, and which contribute significantly to international research into the disease.
Last year, Lady Elsie officially opened the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation PET Tracer Production Unit, which was jointly funded by the charity and Newcastle University. The charity also announced it was contributing £850,000 towards life-saving new stereotactic radio-surgery equipment at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
Both of these major advances in treatment and tumour detection for cancer patients will work in tandem with the clinical trials of new drugs within the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre.
