Roeder Won't Make Souness Mistake

Yes, I know this is like a broken record ... but Kieron Dyer has set his sights on mid-October to make his comeback for Newcastle United after another nightmare year through injury.

The Magpies midfielder made just four starting appearances in the Premiership last term and missed half the season the campaign before that - just as he did in 2001 and 2002. So the 'Dyer Returns' headlines must get more coverage than any other in the last five years.

The midfielder is now targeting the visit of Bolton Wanderers to St James' Park on October 15 to make his first team return. But Glenn Roeder insists he won't make the mistakes Graeme Souness made in constantly trying to rush him back before he was fully fit.

Roeder: 'We have a very strong midfield and I'm not under the same pressure Graeme Souness was under when the club had an injury crisis. Kieron will return, but only when fully fit.'

Dyer: 'I want to get involved as soon as possible. Where the manager is so good, he says he does not mind keeping me out an extra two weeks just to be 100 per cent sure.

'After the international week, we have a couple of reserve games against Liverpool away and I think we have got a re-arranged game against Wigan. I am looking to be involved in both games and then hopefully that will put me in good stead for the senior fixture against Bolton.'
