Shola Ameobi says his partnership with Obafemi Martins can be as deadly as the famous Toon duos of the past.
Newcastle Utd has a fabulous recent history of striker partnerships including Supermac-Tudor; Beardley-Keegan; Beardsley-Cole; Quinn-McGhee; and possibly the best of them all ... Shearer-Ferdinand. So what about Ameobi-Martins?
As we all know, Sir Bobby Robson always said Ameobi lacked the 'X Factor' of greatness. But can Martins get the best out of him? Sadly, Martins is struggling to get the best out of HIMSELF, as we saw on Wednesday. Another game where he was totally out of touch with the pace of the game.
Ameobi: 'It's always going to be tough when you have a new player playing alongside you.
'I've been working with Oba to try to get an understanding going. It hasn't been easy, because I haven't been able to get out on to the training ground as much as I would have liked. But we're starting to understand each other and I have a feeling this is going to blossom. He's a great player and I enjoy playing alongside him. I think it's going to be a good thing that we've got here.
'I'm sure it will be a great partnership after a few games. We need a few more games to work together, but it's coming. I'm excited because he's a great talent and a great goalscorer. Hopefully, we can get something going now.'
