'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Ex-Toon Gaffa For Real Madrid!!!

Ruud Gullit has emerged as a surprise candidate for the vacant Real Madrid coaching job.The former Newcastle and Chelsea manager has been the subject of some hefty bets with Ladbrokes, who have halved his odds to 6-1.

Gullit resigned as manager of Newcastle after only five games of the 1999-2000 season when they were beaten by arch rivals Sunderland after the Dutchman had left local hero Alan Shearer out of the starting line-up.

The former European player of the year started his career in management when he was appointed player-boss of Chelsea in 1996 and won the FA Cup in his first season in charge.

He managed Feyenoord in his homeland last season but quit in May when the Rotterdam club finished trophyless.

Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said: 'Ruud Gullit has been popular early doors and is in from 12-1 to 6s.

'As soon as we opened up Irureta was very popular and we've already been forced to trim him.

'But Sven-Goran Eriksson is not proving very popular so far - but he'll be used to that.'
