'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Pardew Targets Europa League Glory

We find ourselves in Europa Cup action at St James' Park this Thursday against Ukranian giants, Metalist Kharkiv.

A team who haven't played a competitive game since very early December and who's last 'friendly' was a 1-1 draw against one of our non-league neighbours, Whitley Bay.

Regardless of this, Alan Pardew should know as well as anyone that winning this cup is high up on the wish lists of many a NUFC fan and today made some positive statements in how we are gonna attack the thing.

Speaking to the NUFC official website he said.

'It's a competition we'd all love to win,'

'It's difficult to get through the group stage, make no mistake, so we don't want that hard work to be for nothing.

'I'll be picking a strong side for Thursday. The new lads who arrived last month have given us greater depth, so I'll take advantage of that with my team selection.

'Metalist are a good side, you just have to look at the teams they finished above in their group to realise that, so they'll get our full respect.

'But the last 16 is in our reach and there could be some big ties ahead for us. I'm sure our fans would relish bringing more big European nights to St. James' Park so we'll be doing everything we can to progress and deliver that.'

Hopefully Pardew is true to his word and we don't get anymore lame efforts as make no mistake, any trophy win would satisfy even the most negative of our fans.

I see his Pardish at work already. he mentions the depth of the squad we have now with the new lads, so I expect him to pick fringe players as he did in the FA Cup. I simply do not trust him one little bit, but I would dearly love to be proved wrong.
