... the trip wasn't all in vain. Stephen Carr cadged himself a lift back on Fat Fred's private plane, and as a reward has assured Roeder he will be ready for Saturday's opener with Wigan Athletic, despite damaging his hamstring in the match with Holland.
Carr made his international return for the Republic, after retiring from inernational duty last season. But it was a far from happy return to Lansdowne Road for the defender. He was injured in the first half and Ireland were hammered 4-0.
Freddy brought both Carr and Alan O'Brien back to Tyneside in his private plane, which touched down at Newcastle Airport just before midnight.
