'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Newcastle Utd 2 PSV 3

I'm not pointing any blame on Duff, but it was certainly a downer on his welcoming party.

The Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven didn't see it as an afternoon to give out any presents.

Jefferson Farfan opened the scoring in the 16th minute, Jan Vennegoor extended PSV's lead after 41 minutes as he converted Michael Lamey's cross, and then Arouna Kone created the chance which Jason Culina capitalised on five minutes after half-time.

Ameobi headed a cross from James Milner beyond goalkeeper Oscar Moens in the 68th minute. And it was Shola who won a penalty for Luque to get his name on the scoresheet.

Newcastle then had chances to draw level, with Stephen Carr and Scott Parker both threatening from outside the penalty area before Milner spurned a late opportunity.
