On The Couch With Carlos - BARTON

Just a few thoughts on this JB move and a bit about rehab/addictive behaviour and therapy.

There are a number of key variables in successful therapy, one of which is obviously a desire to change and recognition of the wrongs and maladaptive/ dysfunctional behaviours that led to negative outcomes; some of the others are a support network, consistency and a secure base to develop from...

Anyway, Joe has made big progress in recent months, it's clear that he has a secure relationship and is an expectant father but what worries me is that NUFC has been at the centre of nearly all the major developments he has made in his personal life. I don't buy into him engineering the media to contrive a decent move and I do believe he is desperate to stay, unfortunately it's clearly falling on deaf ears and his drive to be outspoken has over-ridden the tact and diplomacy he needed to secure a new contract.

Long and the short of it - I hope he goes to Warnock, who I think will look after him, otherwise I worry about him, he's not as secure or strong as he makes out, rather he's a psychologically and emotionally damaged individual in recovery - he needs stability away from NUFC because NUFC ironically represents that more than any other place or time in his life.

There is a certain amount of symbolism in recovery; addicts, fuck-ups, generally look to specifics which represent happier or more stable times in their lives to build on, the peverse thing is that for Joey, it's us!
