'If It's Football, It's Vital'

'New Shearer' WAS Target

It is understandable Shepherd will not make any comment in public about his intended targets, but we can confirm enquiries have been made about West Ham United's Dean Ashton and German international Miroslav Klose.

When at Crewe, Ashton was said by manager Dario Gradi to be 'the new Alan Shearer' but insisted he was too quiet for his own good. 'He needs to be as nasty as Shearer, and frighten defenders!'

Ashton insisted he was happy at Upton Park yesterday, although in the same statement he also admitted he was 'extremely flattered' by Newcastle's interest, while Klose is on holiday having won the Golden Boot as top goalscorer at the World Cup.

Flattered to join a powerhouse that finished one win above his current team who have had there leading striker retire and his prodigy out for at least the best part of the season. This time last year Newcastle fans would have been thinking/expecting 30 goals (?) from the pair, not going to happen this season and the Hammers have bought well, so positions will be reversed this season.

i hope u sign duff rather than spuds
Adilson
Ashton is a good player and is very much in the Shearer mould
DougInABox
why ould duff want to play for a team like newcastle? no offense newky fans because i respect you as a club. good fans and very proffessionally run, but you have nothing more than money to offer him. ok you have MO and even he doesn't want to play for you, but no more shearer, Luque couldnt hit a barn door, Ameobi is 11th choice england striker, Emre isnt quite living up to expectations and Scotty Parker is wishing he never went there. Fair play to you for wanting to improve but you cannot offer him anything other than money realistically. im a spurs fan and i would really like to sign duff, but we all know if liverpool really want him, he'll go there so no use crying over it.
ExiL
I'd snaffle up Ashton if there were any chance of it. Only problem would be a lack of pace, but he looks to be a quality investment by West Ham - why didn't we go for him when Norwich were selling up? And that was a rather random outburst, ExiL. You'll see that he's signed for Newcastle, subject to a medical.

no i meant no disrespect mate. like i said i respect newcastle and their fans a lot but i just honestly cant see what you guys can offer him. no european football and an average team. im not being nasty or bitter because hes signing for you because if he feels thats the right move for him then fair play to both parties. Newcastle are a massive club, probably almost as big as us and much bigger than chelsea. i hope you have a good season next year
ExiL
Duff is gonna go to newcastle but lillestrom will knock them out of the intertoto! then duff will have a wonderful time playing 38 games next yr plus 1 or 2 cup games, and thats only if he stays fit. Anyway, who exactly will score from the service he provides. shearer gone, owen dead, luque shoite, ameobi shoiter, and now nzogbia will wanna leave cos he is better than a sub!
BringBack_LeGin
and by the way, newcastle have done no more than we have in the signing. weve both agreed personal terms and passed a medical. the only think newky have done is agreed a fee with chelsea, which we can easily match if we wish
ExiL
ur wrong there exil. duff didn't come to us because we reused to pay £70k a weeks like the barcodes will. if it wasnt for the wages we would havce offered the £10m!
BringBack_LeGin
You'll fall on your Duff and your Butt out of the UEFA games. Losers!
USA
I dont think duff made a bad decision in going there as every1 knows any1 with a bit of flare is a god in the tyne but the club has no ambition so therefore within 9 months, i guarantee, mark my words, duff wants to leave for some reason. no one ever wants to stay at newky because its like a giant pit where good players argue with each other and fall apart. you used to be a team i didnt feel confident playing newcastle. not anymore...
ExiL
