Shola Given The Job

Shola Given The Job

Yes, that was what we reported LAST WEEK, and Roeder went with a strike formation of Albert Luque and James Milner.

We don't expect Roeder to spill the beans on everything, but we have to report what the fella says, and to be honest you feel as though you walk away from a press conference knowing less than when you went in! And with Ameobi being the only recognised striker on the books following Alan Shearer's retirement, Michael Owen's injury and Michal Chopra's departure for Cardiff ... we did expect Ameobi to start at St James' Park last week.

Ameobi must return to the starting line-up for the vital Intertoto Cup clash with Lillestrom in Norway, as the pressure is on the Newcastle manager to get a result.

Goals are not what this team is all about, and despite a wealth of experience in the side, Nobby Solano is the top scorer in the current squad!

Roeder: 'As far as I'm concerned, Shola Ameobi is an established player at Newcastle United, so it's not an opportunity for him because he did fantastically well for me (at the end of last season.)

'He scored a goal every other game, and if he can keep that up throughout the season and we find another striker that tops him, our strikers will have scored plenty of goals by the end of the season.

'The opportunity really arises now for Albert. It's now his turn to step up on to the stage and show everyone what he can do.'

Dissapointed that we didn't sign Duff but really was it on the cards !!! Just think about it, since the Arnesen fiasco we have been linked with loads of Chelsea players, Bridge,Cole, Johnson, Duff etc but we haven't signed any why not !! For the same reason we don't want to sell Defoe or Carrick to Man U , Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea. Top clubs in the prem dont want to sell top players to the top clubs. Thats the reason behind Chelsea taking the first offer from a club who wont be direct competion to the top four no disrespect to Newcastle. Liverpoool and Spurs never really had a look in. Though I think this was a bit of a panic buy because you really need a leader on the pitch in defence or central midfield or someone to score goals for ya, Duff will make the chance but who will stick them away ??????
