Viana - The Man Who Got Away?

Hugo Viana finally left Newcastle United a couple of weeks ago, almost two years since he last played for the club. And how I thought he was going to have the last laugh by scoring against England in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday.

The midfielder, a substitute for Portugal in the match, was signed by Sir Bobby Robson from Sporting Lisbon but spent a loan spell at his former club before joining Valencia last season in a similar deal.

He never settled on Tyneside and struggled in the Premiership, insisting (like so many Latin players who come to Newcastle) that it was 'too physical' for him. He was the only Portuguese player to miss a penalty in the shoot-out against England, but still saw his side progress to the last four.

Viana, 23, joined Newcastle for £7 million three years ago and completed his move to Valencia in Spain for £2 million.

We've bought worse. The monumental disaster that was Elena "broken finger" Marcelino comes to mind. I think he was just badly coached, didn't seem as though anyone bothered to help him bulk up so that he could handle the physical aspect of the Premiership.
