'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Day The Penny Dropped

It is a well known fact most Toon fans never took to Graeme Souness.

In fact it was a total surprise he was even given the job by chairman Freddy Shepherd. But like Souness, Shepherd has his critics, and even though the fans had the ex-Rangers boss sussed out long before his exit, it took a lot longer for the penny to drop with Fat Fred!

However, Shepherd pinpoints the moment in the club's latest DVD.

Shepherd: 'It was one of those things where the manager knew it was time to go and the board knew it was time for him to go.

'At the Man City game when (Scott) Parker, Emre and (Lee) Clark all ran in to each other in the centre circle during the game, I thought then, either I had lost the plot or the manager had lost the plot because that should never happen in a football game.

'Obviously the formation was completely wrong. I would never try to tell Graeme Souness how to put a team out, but just looking at it I thought something was seriously wrong.'

All very well in hindsight but everyone could see it wasn't right from the start. What does Fat Fred know about formations and tactics?!
