'If It's Football, It's Vital'

'Ifs And Butts' For Blades

Nicky Butt is a player who has just about won it all, but he is finding it increasingly difficult to find a happy home after leaving his beloved Old Trafford. The midfielder, 30, spent last season on loan to Birmingham after failing to establish himself at St James' Park.

But he will return, whether he likes it or not, and Glenn Roeder has a major problem to solve. Freddy Shepherd wants Butt off the wage bill, and it is the player's wages that have just frightened off newly promoted Sheffield United.

Neil Warnock, Sheff United manager: 'With the wages I've seen mentioned I'd want three players in. People can turn up at the ground and meet him if they like but there won't be anybody there.'

'I've not spoken to Nicky Butt and I've not thought about him'.
