Spurs Link To Toon Transfers

Spurs are set to make a £10 million move for Newcastle target Darren Bent ... BUT that could release another player Glenn Roeder is said to be after.

Reports suggest Spurs will launch a bid for Bent later this week which will prompt further speculation about Jermain Defoe's future at White Hart Lane.

Martin Jol turned down a £12million bid for Defoe last week and has insisted he remains part of his plans, but a move for Bent would seem to give the Toon the opportunity to get their man (or at least, one of them).

Ironically, the Bent missed out on the England squad after Defoe was named as standby for Wayne Rooney, but Jol would appear to favour Bent who scored 18 Premiership goals last season.

you would have a strikeforce of a combined height of about 3ft tall! defoe is a great player, but one newcastle wont be signing! first of all is the compatibilty of defoe and owen, and second of all why? why would he go all the way up to newcastle, up his roots and play for a team that is about 3 years behind spurs! its just not logical. anyways, good luck for next season boys.

Elmo beat me to the answer.. Newcastle's transfers always amaze, but I can't see Owen and Defoe in the same team (england - sic). I think this is the dreaded agents at work again, maybe Bent is heading off somewhere and we are being used to push up the price. This will happen a lot over the summer. Anyway 10m for a player after one good season when he was the lone striker is crazy... Adam - Barnet

Can't see the logic in this myself, I can understand Newcastle going for bent but not Defoe unless they are going to sell Owen which I cannot see really (a swop deal Owen for Defoe would be worth thinking about!)

I do believe that Defoe was recently quoted as saying that Glen Roeder was the most influential man in his career to date. Have you also thought, that maybe, if you got defoe then owen might move away and you'd get a big target man instead?

APOLOGIES !! It was Joe cole that said it, in an article i was reading 10 minutes ago on this very site. Sorry.

Still don't understand why us buying another striker would threaten Defoe's place in our squad. Most teams aim to have four top quality strikers to rotate with during the course of the season and we're no different. Still, the media have to indulge their feeding frenzy, I suppose.
Othello
Othello hello? Look what happened to Defoe at Spurs last season with 31/2 strikers and why do you think we are having this conversation. He will not go to Newcastle and sit on your cruddy freezing splinter ridden bench with even more competition in the small striker department. AND... it is not even looking to be a long season with extra game time at Newcastle.

I'd rather you bought Darren Bent and we keep Defoe. £10Mil for him!??!?!?
