Campbell The New Toon Skipper?

United target Sol Campbell has reportedly been told he is surplus to requirements by Arsenal.

The centre-back has had a troubled season in North London and it is thought manager Arsene Wenger has tired of the 'high maintenance' player, especially given the impressive way Philipe Senderos and Koulo Toure performed together in the England international's absence.

Campbell is currently on World Cup duty and reluctant to make any decision on his future until he returns home from the tournament, but despite the solid performances of Craig Moore and Titus Bramble at the end of last season, and the emergence of youngster Steven Taylor, Roeder has targeted a new centre-back as one of his transfer priorities.

Moore insists he will see out another year at St James' Park, but that decision will lie with Roeder.

Inter Milan and Fenerbahce are also interested. Arsenal are unlikely to ask a big fee for the 31-year-old as Campbell commands big wages, thought to be in the region of £80,000 a week. But now that Alan Shearer, United's biggest earner, is off the books there doesn't seem to be a problem.
